Why Bet on Houston?

The Rockets took a 3-0 lead with Saturday’s 104-101 victory. James Harden made just 3-of-20 attempts from the field on Saturday but did make 14-of-16 free throws en route to 22 points with four rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, one block, and two 3-pointers in 39 minutes.

Harden started the game off by going 0-of-10 in the first half, joining Michael Jordan as the last two players to shoot that bad or worse in the first half of a playoff game. Then Harden game out in the second half and missed five more shots, setting the new postseason record for most missed shots without a make (0-of-15). But he came up clutch down the stretch with 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Chris Paul scored 18 points (7-of-15 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) with four rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two 3-pointers in 33 minutes. P.J. Tucker double-doubled with 12 points (3-of-11 FGs, 4-of-6 FTs) with 10 rebounds, three assists, and two 3-pointers in 35 minutes. He also secured a late offensive rebound that effectively sealed the win for Houston.

Houston won Game 3 despite being outshot 41.6% to 38.4% after outshooting Utah 48.9% to 39.4% the first two games. The Rockets improved to 7-10 when failing to outshoot their opponent in playoff games under head coach Mike D’Antoni (back to 2017) after losing 10 of their previous 11 playoff games when doing so from 2015-2016. Houston has hit 15+ 3-pointers in all three games this series and in an NBA record 10 straight games dating back to the regular season.

Dating back to last postseason, Houston is actually 4-1 when shooting below 40.0% after losing 15 of its previous 17 playoff games when doing so from 2007-2017. No team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit in NBA playoff history. With a win Monday, the Rockets would advance to the Conference Semifinals for the third straight season under head coach Mike D’Antoni after doing so twice from 1997-98 through 2015-16 (Conference Finals in 2014-15 and Semifinals in 2008-09).

Why Bet on Utah?

Donovan Mitchell scored 34 points (9-of-27 FGs, 12-of-17 FTs) against the Rockets on Saturday, adding six rebounds, five assists, three steals, one block, and four 3-pointers in 42 minutes. Mitchell led the way for the Jazz in Game 3, taking 18 more shots than the next closest player on the team (Joe Ingles with nine). He started hot but missed 11 straight shots in the middle part of the game. Mitchell had a chance to tie the game with a late triple, but his shot was way off.

Mitchell is averaging 21.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 steals during this Rockets playoff series but is shooting just 32.8% from the field and 63.6% from the free-throw line. Eric Gordon and Austin Rivers have been the primary defenders on Mitchell and have made him work for everything.

Rockets vs Jazz Game 4 should be a close one.

Rudy Gobert came close to a triple-double Saturday, scoring 10 points (3-of-4 FGs, 4-of-6 FTs) with eight rebounds, seven blocks and one assist in 33 minutes. Gobert set a new playoff-high in blocked shots. Derrick Favors scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting (3-of-6 FTs) with four rebounds and two blocks in 15 minutes. Coach Quin Snyder decided to mix things up in Game 3, moving Jae Crowder into the starting lineup in Favors’ place. Crowder was quiet, scoring just five points on 1-of-3 shooting.

Utah has shot below 45.0% from the floor in all three games this series and 40.1% overall. The last time the Rockets held opponents below 45.0% shooting three straight playoff games was in 2015. The Jazz are shooting 25.5% from 3-point range this series after shooting 28.5% vs. Houston in the regular season. Utah is averaging 15.0 turnovers with Houston averaging 17.7 points off turnovers.
