Why Bet on Golden State?

Golden State has been off since a wild 138-136 OT loss at Oklahoma City last Friday. The Thunder scored 35 points off Golden State’s 29 turnovers — the most turnovers the Thunder have forced in a game since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City before the 2008-2009 season. Steph Curry could have won it in regulation, but with Oklahoma City defensive stopper Lu Dort guarding him, Curry missed a 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime.

Curry shot 10-of-20 from the field and 8-of-8 from the foul line to finish with 34 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Curry has scored 30 or more in two straight and three of his last six outings. Draymond Green added 12 points, five rebounds and 13 assists, recording his second double-double in as many games.

Klay Thompson played 39 minutes in Friday’s loss and had 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting. After shooting 8-of-26 from the field in the two games prior, Thompson was considerably better on Friday. He’s scored 20 or more in five of his last eight games, which represents progress, given Klay’s slow start to the season.

Thompson (illness) was back at practice on Monday after missing Sunday’s session and should play Tuesday. Ditto Chris Paul, who is also battling an illness. s Paul played his last three seasons (2020-21 – 2022-23) with the Suns, appearing in 194 games (all starts), averaging 15.1 points (48.0 FG%, 36.6 3P%, 86.7 FT%), 4.4 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.6 steals in 32.1 minutes per game.

Golden State’s last three losses, all on the road, have been by a combined four points. It’s the first time in franchise history the Warriors have lost three road games in a row and the combined score was fewer than five points. The last time this happened to an NBA team was the 2006-07 New Jersey Nets when they lost three consecutive road games by a combined total of three points (1/22 – 1/25/07). The last three road games the Warriors have lost each game by two points or less, a first in Warriors franchise history. The last time this happened to an NBA team was the 2021-22 Lakers (2/3 – 2/12/22).

The Warriors have played 18 games this season considered “clutch games” – games decided in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points. The Warriors lead the NBA with 18 of these games (9-9 record); second is Phoenix with 14 (6-8 record).

Golden State is averaging 16.5 second-chance points per game, ranked third in the league behind Utah (18.1) and Orlando (17.0). Golden State ranks third in the NBA in second-chance total points behind the Jazz (380) and Magic (356). The Warriors average 12.7 offensive boards a game, tied for fourth in the league. Kevon Looney is averaging a team-high 2.9 offensive rebounds per game this season (averaged 3.3 last season).

Why Bet on Phoenix?

All-Star guard Bradley Beal (back) will be available for Tuesday’s game against the Warriors. Beal has been a full go at recent practices and is all set to make his first appearance since Nov. 12. Beal likely will be on a minutes restriction. The veteran and marquee offseason acquisition for Phoenix has been held to three games to this point in the season due to his back. He averaged 17.3 points per game on 39% shooting on the floor.

Beal has yet to play with Devin Booker, the lone member of the Big 3 to suit up in Friday’s loss against the Sacramento Kings with Kevin Durant nursing a sprained ankle. Durant is questionable for Tuesday. Should Durant not be cleared, Keita Bates-Diop would likely get another start. Durant currently ranks 3rd in the NBA this season in scoring (31.0 PPG), highest scoring average in a season since he won the NBA scoring title in 2013-14 at 32.0 PPG. Durant has scored 25+ points in a franchise-long 18 consecutive games, while his 589 points through his first 19 games of this season are the most in franchise history and the most he’s scored in the first 19 games of his career.

Grayson Allen (groin strain) and Nassir Little (concussion protocol/orbital bone fracture) have been ruled out for Tuesday’s game. Of the two, Allen’s absence is more impactful, as he’s been in the starting lineup for most of the season. The ailing Suns have dropped four out of five games and are 12-10 this season. Booker has missed nine games and Durant three.

Booker shot 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from the foul line in Friday’s 114-106 loss to the Kings, accounting for 28 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Booker ranks 5th in the NBA in free throw percentage at 91.6%, while Durant ranks 3rd in the NBA in three-point shooting percentage at 50.0%.

Eric Gordon tallied 19 points and three assists Friday. Gordon has hit double figures in 11 of his last 12 games. With Beal only available for a handful of games, Gordon has been asked to do more than many anticipated before the season began. Jordan Goodwin chipped-in 8 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 19 minutes off the bench on Friday. It marked Goodwin’s 10th game of the season reaching at least 10 rebounds and was his sixth time doing it in the last seven games.

Durant played three seasons for the Warriors, helping guide Golden State to three straight trips to the NBA Finals (2017-2019) and winning back-to-back championships and back-to-back Finals MVP honors in 2017 and 2018. With Golden State, Durant appeared in 208 games (all starts), averaging 25.8 points (.524 FG%, .384 3P%, .883 FT%), 7.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.5 blocks in 34.1 minutes per game.
