As we’re headed down the stretch run of the college basketball season, get ready to hear the phrase “on the bubble” a lot over the next few weeks. The NCAA Tournament is just a few short weeks away, and teams are making their final pushes to make sure that they’re one of the 68 teams to make the tournament. Teams are also jockeying for position within their conferences. As the conference races are heating up, let’s take a look at what’s happening at the start of the week in the college hoops world so you can continue placing your bets against their College Basketball odds.
NCAA Basketball COVID-19 Update – February 8th Edition
Monday, February 8th will only see three ranked teams in action. A night that’s a little light on college hoops action, will only see five games cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the tournament draws near, we’re hoping to see fewer and fewer games affected by the coronavirus.
In one of the top games of the evening, the #7 Ohio State Buckeyes will travel to College Park to face Mark Turgeon’s Maryland Terrapins. The Buckeyes have quietly made their way up the rankings, and are now in good position to make a run at the Big 10 championship. Ohio State is coming off of a huge win at Iowa on Thursday, and are playing great basketball, as they have won four straight.
As for Maryland, they have been very inconsistent this season. They were beating teams that they probably shouldn’t have, and losing to teams that they were better than. They’ve hit a little bit of a rough patch, and are coming off of a devastating loss to Penn State. This could be a trap game for Ohio State, so Chris Holtmann better have his team prepared for this one.
Another game involved a ranked team will see the #23 Kansas Jayhawks host the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Kansas has been falling in the rankings, as is currently sitting in sixth place in the Big 12 standings. It has been many years since the Jayhawks have fallen that low in the conference race. After a tough loss to #17 West Virginia on Saturday, Bill Self’s team will be looking to rebound against a very good Oklahoma State Cowboys squad.
The Cowboys are coming off of a come-from-behind overtime victory over the #6 Texas Longhorns on Saturday. They’ll be coming to Lawrence with a ton of momentum. Freshman phenom Cade Cunningham will be prepped and ready for his first, and most likely last, trip to Phog Allen Fieldhouse.
In the final game involving a ranked team on Monday, the top team in the nation, the Gonzaga Bulldogs will travel to Provo, Utah to take on Mark Pope’s BYU Cougars. We all know how good Gonzaga is. They’re the most talented team in the country led by the three-headed monster of Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert, and Drew Timme.
As for BYU, they’ve struggled throughout most of the season, but have recently been putting things together. After some lineup changes, BYU has developed some chemistry, and have been playing better basketball. They’ll need to play their best game of the season if they want to keep up with the high-powered Zags offense.
