Why Bet on Duke Blue Devils?

The Blue Devils (15-4, 6-2 ACC) won their second game in a row Saturday, 72-71 over Clemson. The Tigers’ PJ Hall made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in regulation before Josh Beadle was called for a foul with one second left that would allow the Blue Devils to take the lead on two free throws by Tyrese Proctor and win the game.

Proctor finished with 18 points and was joined in double-figures by Jared McCain – who finished with a game-high 21 points – and Mark Mitchell, who poured in 13 points. Duke saw a balanced rebounding effort, with six different players grabbing at least four boards – led by Mitchell’s six caroms. Duke is 26-2 all-time when Mitchell scored at least 10 points.

Proctor has scored at least 10 points in each of Duke’s last four games, averaging 17.5 points across that stretch. He has connected on four 3-pointers in back-to-back games, matching his career-high for 3-pointers made. Proctor has netted three or more triples in four contests this season and nine in his two-year career. The Blue Devils are undefeated (9-0) in those games.

The Blue Devils’ defense held Clemson to 71 points, 9.7 below its season average of 80.7 points. The Blue Devils have now held 17 of their 19 opponents below their respective scoring average.

Among ACC leaders, Kyle Filipowski ranks seventh in scoring (17.7 ppg), fourth in rebounding (8.7 rpg), third in blocked shots (2.0 bpg) and seventh in field goal percentage (.498). Filipowski has tallied double-doubles in seven of Duke’s last 14 games, moving his career total to 23 double-doubles in 55 games played. He has tallied 56 assists (56 in 2022-23) and has already blocked 37 shots, after swatting a total of 26 attempts during his freshman year.

Jeremy Roach tops the ACC and ranks 11th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (3.44), while Proctor is positioned third in the conference and 33rd nationally (2.90). After averaging 7.6 points per outing in the first eight games of the season, McCain has reached the 20-point mark in five of the last 11 games, shooting 63-of-124 (50.8%) from the field, 29-of-69 (42.0%) from beyond the arc and 22-of-25 (88.0%) from the free-throw line to average 16.1 points per contest during that stretch. McCain has made two 3-pointers or more in 14 games this season. The Blue Devils are 13-1 when McCain makes at least two triples.

Why Bet on Virginia Tech Hokies?

Virginia Tech (13-7, 5-4 ACC) could use a win like this to boost its NCAA Tournament resume. The Hokies come off their third straight win, 91-67 over Georgia Tech on Saturday. Baye Ndongo and Miles Kelly spurred a Georgia Tech second-half rally that reduced a 21-point deficit to seven with under eight minutes to go, but Virginia Tech recovered and finished the game on a 27-10 run. The Hokies clicked on all cylinders offensively, shooting 51.5 percent in the first half in taking a 44-28 lead into the locker room, and 60 percent in the second. They hit 12 three-point field goals in the game and also got 36 points in the paint.

Virginia Tech received balanced inside scoring led by 18 points apiece from Lynn Kidd and Mylyjael Poteat to improve to 10-1 at home. Poteat’s 18 points tied his career high that he previously set at Rice against UAB on Jan. 8, 2022. Almost all of work came around the rim whether he was making easy buckets in the paint or drawing fouls and making free throws, going 6-6 from the free-throw line in this game.

“They’re hard to handle one-on-one,” Hokies coach Mike Young said of Kidd and Poteat. “We thought had a real advantage in the post. I didn’t think [the Yellow Jackets] were as big as some others. That 3 is sexy and it looks good and we’ve got a number of guys that can really crank it. But man, give me that 2 feet in the post and that guy jumping up over the top of somebody and making a little jump hook.”

Robbie Beran added 14 points, and Hunter Cattoor and Tyler Nickel 11 each. VT shared the rock, compiling 23 assists on 32 field goals made. The Hokies also won the battle on the glass, 37-31. They are also now 7-3 this season when knocking down at least 10 triples in a game. Under Young overall, Tech is 42-11 when hitting double-digit threes in a game. Five of those losses came in Young’s first season at the helm. VT also leads the ACC and ranks second nationally in free-throw percentage at 79.9.

While Duke comes in as the superior team on paper Monday, the Hokies have had great success at home, winning five of their last six games against Duke inside Cassell Coliseum. What has been the key in the team’s overall three-game winning streak currently?

“We look a lot more connected,” Young said of the streak. “We look a lot more cohesive. Teams come together at different points when you’re … trying to blend in new faces and there’s some gnawing of gears, if you will, trying to find the right match and the right chemistry.”
