Series History

Kansas State leads USC all-time 4-1. The last meeting between the schools was a historic one for K-State, as the Wildcats captured its first NCAA Tournament win since 1988 with their 80-67 victory over the 6-seed Trojans in the first round of the Midwest Regional at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., on March 20, 2008.

Why Bet on USC Trojans?

The Trojans went 22-11 during the 2022-23 season, including a 14-6 record in Pac-12 play which tied for second in the conference. USC also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. USC held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting in 19 of its 33 games and to a 39.3 shooting percentage overall, 8th in the country.

It was the Trojans’ fourth consecutive 20-win season, a school record for back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Trojans return leading scorer and All-Pac-12 guard Boogie Ellis and have added the No. 4 ranked recruiting class in the country, which includes the consensus No. 1 overall player, guard Isaiah Collier, and Bronny James, son of LeBron James.

However, Bronny will not play Monday after going into cardiac arrest during a workout in late July. LeBron has only said that his son had undergone heart surgery and has hopes to return to the court for his freshman year. Coach Andy Enfield said that Bronny’s return is yet to be determined.

“He’s doing well,” Enfield said recently. “I think at the appropriate time the James family will give further updates. As LeBron stated at media day, things were progressing, and under any medical condition, we respect the privacy of the young man. But I think everybody is very supportive and hoping he gets back quickly.”

Ellis was named to the 2024 Jerry West Award Watch List which recognizes the top collegiate shooting guards. The fifth-year guard Ellis led USC with a 17.7 points per game average last season and was named to the 2022-23 Pac-12 All-Conference first team. He finished fourth in the league in scoring and tied for first in three-pointers made with 83. Ellis scored a total of 583 points which ranks 10th on USC’s all-time single-season list. Ellis also made 80.5 percent of his free throws, while making a team-leading 120 shots from the charity stripe. He was also second among Trojans with 46 steals and 102 assists.

As a senior, the highly touted freshman Collier averaged 19.6 points, 6.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game for Wheeler High in Georgia. Collier was a 2022-23 McDonald’s All-American and went on to become co-MVP at the McDonald’s All-American Game, as he scored a game-high 25 points.

USC’s 95 total wins the last four seasons are tied for sixth-most among all Power 6 basketball programs, trailing only Kansas (111), Baylor (104), Arizona (99), UCLA (99) and Duke (97). Also, USC’s 182 wins the last eight seasons ranks tied for 14th among all Power 6 conference teams.

USC lost 74-61 in its 2022-23 season opener at home against FGCU on Nov. 22, 2022. That loss snapped a seven-game home opener winning streak. USC is now 81-36 all-time in season openers. USC is opening up away from the Galen Center for the first time since the 2013-14 season when the Trojans lost 78-65 at Utah State. The last time USC opened the season with a neutral site game was an 82-77 loss vs. North Carolina on Nov. 27, 1987 in the first round of the Richmond Holiday Classic.

Why Bet on Kansas State Wildcats?

Not much was expected last year under then first-year coach Jerome Tang but the Wildcats were terrific, finishing at 26-10 and reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament where KSU was upset by No. 9 Florida Atlantic in a thriller. The Wildcats return three starters (Nae’Quan Tomlin – 10.4 ppg, Cam Carter – 6.5 ppg and David N’Guessan – 6.4 ppg) and have added nine new players to the roster since last season.

Junior Arthur Kaluma and fifth-year senior Tylor Perry were each chosen as Honorable Mention selections to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by the league coaches for this season. A 6-foot-7, 225-pound wing, Kaluma transferred to K-State after an impressive 2-year stint (2021-23) at Creighton. Kaluma averaged double-figure scoring both seasons at Creighton – as a sophomore, he averaged 11.8 points on 42.3 percent (146-of-345) shooting to go with 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in starting all 37 games for the Bluejays.

A 5-foot-11, 182-pound guard, Perry came to K-State after a decorated 2-year career (2021-23) at North Texas, where he led the Mean Green to 56 total wins, including a school-record 31 in 2022-23, the 2023 NIT Championship and 2022 C-USA regular-season title. In addition to being the 2023 C-USA Player of the Year and NIT Most Outstanding Player, he was twice named to the C-USA First Team (2022, 2023) while was the league’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2022. He was the Mean Green’s leading scorer (17.3 ppg.) in 2022-23 while leading the C-USA in 3-point field goal percentage (41.3), free throw percentage (87.2) and minutes (34.2) and placing second in 3-pointers/game (3.11) and fourth in scoring.

K-State will open the season away from home for the first time since 2002. K-State is 12-16 all-time when starting the season away from home, including 3-3 in neutral site openers. The Wildcats have lost 3 consecutive openers away from home (losses to BYU in 2002, at Arizona in 1999 and at Alabama in 1994) with the last win coming in a 71-70 nailbiter against Florida State at the Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 24, 1989.

Monday’s game will mark just the fourth time in school history that K-State has opened a season against a ranked opponent. It is the first such matchup since an 88-69 loss at No. 10 Arizona on Nov. 16, 1999. In total, the Wildcats are 0-3 all-time vs. ranked foes in an opener.

K-State’s 12-1 non-conference mark in 2022-23 was the best since the 2009-10 team went a program-best 13-1. The 12 wins last season matched the 2008-09 and 2010-11 teams for the second-most in that span.
