Vegas Odds March Madness: Predicting 2024 Tournament Field before the Selection Sunday

Written by on March 14, 2024

Next week, we will be gearing up to follow the Madness. March Madness! The NCAA Tournament. The 2024 version of it. While the field is not set for the tournament, we have a pretty good idea how the Top 24 teams will play out. Things on the court can change this a little, but here is our best shot at predicting the March Madness tournament field, for the 24 top at large spots.

Tuesday, March 19th – Monday, April 8th, 2024
Selection Sunday: March 17

1’s: UConn Huskies, Houston Cougars, Purdue Boilermakers, Tennessee Volunteers

The only real question here – will Tennessee grab that final #1 seed? The Huskies, Cougars and Boilermakers are all going to be #1 seed. Will it matter who the overall #1 is? They should all be able to go to the region they hope for. UConn to the East, Purdue to the Midwest and Houston to the South. That leaves Tennessee potentially heading West.

2’s: Arizona Wildcats, North Carolina Tar Heels, Kentucky Wildcats, Creighton Blue Jays

Arizona is another team looking for that final #1 seed. And they could get it. The committee could be watching both Tennessee and Arizona this weekend and coming up with their decision. Is North Carolina a sixth team to consider? Kentucky and Creighton both are here, and both are red hot teams you do not want to face right now.

3’s: Iowa State Cyclones, Marquette Golden Eagles, Duke Blue Devils, Baylor Bears

Two teams from the Big 12 here. The Big 12 appeared to be the best conference in the country, but the Big East was right there. Marquette is on the border of a 3 or 4. They have a big time question mark with Tyler Kolek and his ability to play or not. Duke comes in here as well. The Blue Devils lost both games to North Carolina, but this is a talented team you do not want to overlook in the dance.

4’s: Illinois Fighting Illini, Kansas Jayhawks, Alabama Crimson Tide, South Carolina Gamecocks

Illinois, with Brad Underwood as the head coach seems to be locked in. This is a team that has spent several seasons losing too early in the dance. Kansas looks to be running on fumes, as they could be without a couple starters. A pair of SEC teams also grabbed 4 seeds. For Alabama, can they defend enough? South Carolina is a little new to the party, so will the lights be too bright?

5’s:Auburn Tigers, Brigham Young Cougars, Utah State Aggies, Saint Mary’s Gaels

Bruce Pearl and his Auburn Tigers are a team no one really knows how to handicap. The Brigham Young Cougars spent their first season in the Big 12 and really had a pretty good outcome. They are likely going to be seeded as a Top 20 team. Utah State is a surprise out of the Mountain West. Saint Mary’s is back in the Top 25, with their WCC title over Gonzaga.

6’s: Washington State Cougars, Nevada Wolf Pack, Dayton Flyers, Gonzaga Bulldogs

Washington State was one of the surprise teams that was a game away from winning the Pac-12 regular season title. Nevada is another Mountain West Conference team. They are going to give one of those 3 seeds all they want in the second round. That seems to be a theme here, as Dayton is another team that will be tough to take down. Gonzaga is back. It was a down year in Gonzaga terms, but here they are, with less expectations as the dance gets underway.

2024 March Madness Tournament Field

Previous Betting News

The NCAA Tournament is right around the corner. Of course, a ton can happen between now and the start of the Big Dance. But, when we go to predict the March Madness Tournament field, we come up with 45 teams in the large pool that we are looking at to make the tournament. The other 23 would come from the conference tournament winners.

2024 March Madness | 85th edition of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament
Tuesday, March 19th – Monday, April 8th, 2024
Selection Sunday: Sunday, March 17

Below are the 45 teams we feel are going to make it. Obviously, the teams at the 10’s and 11’s still have work to do. In fact, even some of the 8’s and 9’s do as well. The top 28 teams (1-7 seeds), we feel are pretty locked into the tournament. Now, they could move up a spot or two, or down. Here are the automatic teams we are projecting into the big dance:

1’s: Purdue Boilermakers, Houston Cougars, Connecticut Huskies, Arizona Wildcats

Houston currently is the top ranked team in the country. They appear to be poised to take down the Big 12 regular season title. Purdue from the Big Ten, UConn from the Big East and Arizona from the Pac-12.

2’s: Tennessee Volunteers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Marquette Golden Eagles, Iowa State Cyclones

Tennessee is one of the hottest teams in the country. Marquette is also playing great basketball. The Tar Heels present themselves as a dangerous tournament squad, and Iowa State has been a great surprise all season.

3’s: Alabama Crimson Tide, Kansas Jayhawks,  Duke Blue Devils, Creighton Blue Jays

The Crimson Tide have one of the most potent offensive teams in the country. Duke seems to be a big under rated this season, Creighton can knock down shots with the best of them. Lots of questions about Kansas as they stumbled at home earlier this week.

4’s: Illinois Fighting Illini, San Diego State Aztecs, Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears

Four teams here with major potential to make a run. Brad Underwood’s Illini have a bunch of wins, but no big signature victory. San Diego State made a massive run a season ago, and appear to be talented again. Auburn is great offensively, with question marks on defense, and Baylor is a deadly shooting team.

5’s: Clemson Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats,  Wisconsin Badgers, Washington State Cougars

Clemson, another Atlantic Coast Conference team behind the top two. It’s been a down year for the league, but the Tigers are talented. Kentucky is heating up. Wisconsin has struggled down the stretch. Washington State will be a fun team to follow. The Cougars have swept Arizona this season.

6’s: Dayton Flyers, Saint Mary’s Gaels, South Carolina Gamecocks, Florida Gators

The Flyers and Gaels are those small schools that you just do not want to play in the tournament. Both talented squads that go overlooked. South Carolina has had a break out season, and Florida seems to be sneaking up on teams.

The rest of the at large field for the NCAA Tournament:

7’s: Texas Tech Red Raiders, Brigham Young Cougars, Colorado State Rams, Utah State Aggies

8’s: TCU Horned Frogs, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Boise State Broncos

9’s: Michigan State Spartans, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Florida Atlantic Owls, Northwestern Wildcats

10’s: Nevada Wolf Pack, New Mexico Lobos, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Texas Longhorns

11’s: Seton Hall Pirates, Virginia Cavaliers, South Florida Bulls, Providence Friars, Gonzaga Bulldogs
