Series History

Oregon is 14-9 all-time vs. BYU. The teams haven’t met since March 20, 2014.

Why Bet on BYU?

The Cougars (2-0) come off a 66-60 win over a very good San Diego State team on Friday. Senior guards Alex Barcello and Te’Jon Lucas combined for 30 points. With both teams shooting 39 percent from the field on the game, rebounds and free throws became the tipping point.

BYU shot 78 percent from the free throw line, including an 8-of-8 performance from Lucas and the seventh-consecutive 100 percent free throw showing from Barcello. He has now made 35 consecutive free throws, 15-shy of the program-record set by Tyler Haws in 2012. Against the Aztecs, Barcello passed the mark of 32-straight set by Michael Smith in 1989. San Diego State shot 47 percent from the charity stripe.

Defense was strong on both sides of the ball, resulting in a low-scoring game between the Cougars and Aztecs. BYU had 29 defensive rebounds and capitalized on the 11 SDSU turnovers, resulting in 13 points. SDSU had 25 defensive rebounds and had eight points from BYU turnovers.

“San Diego State was undefeated last year when they outrebounded opponents, and we knew that we had to win on the glass, which is saying something because this is an elite level rebounding team. I’m so proud of this 42 to 38, talk about our guys answering the bell and staying focused,” Coach Mark Pope said.

Barcello is averaging 20.5 points per game following his 17-point performance against the Aztecs. He is shooting 68.6 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from 3-point range and 100.0 percent from the free throw line. Freshman Fousseyni Traore is averaging 7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game off the bench for the Cougars. He was instrumental in Friday’s victory finishing with 9 points and 8 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Why Bet on Oregon?

The Ducks (2-0) beat SMU 86-63 on Friday. Oregon made seven straight shots to open the game, racing out to a 23-6 lead. The Ducks ended up shooting 51.6 percent for the game and held SMU to 37.7 percent shooting.

Eric Williams led the Ducks with 19 points and added five rebounds with three assists. Will Richardson and Jacob Young scored 18 apiece, and Rivaldo Soares had 10 points with seven rebounds.

“As long as you can get stops, you’re always in the game,” junior transfer Rivaldo Soares said. “Coach, when he holds teams under 70, 60 points, they have a great track record. That’s what we’re trying to do. We know we have plenty of talent on the offensive and, and that’ll come throughout the season.”

The Ducks were picked to finish second in the Pac-12. It’s the team’s seventh consecutive preseason top four ranking.  Richardson was named to the Pac-12 preseason all-conference first team, his second-straight season earning preseason all-conference honors. He is the only player in the conference to be named to each of the last two preseason all-conference teams.

Richardson is a career 40% three-point shooter and one of three Pac-12 players to shot over 40% the last two seasons. He is one of 36 players in program history to record 1,000 career points. Richardson is the leading scorer for the Ducks through two games as he’s scoring 19.0 points per contest. He has been stellar from beyond the arc connecting on 8 of 13 attempts.

Through two games, Oregon is scoring 84.5 points per game while shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. They have five players averaging in double figures scoring.
