Season Series

Only scheduled meeting. Last year, they played twice. UNC won at Syracuse 78-74 late in the regular season and then beat the Orange 78-59 in the ACC Tournament. Theo Pinson had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and Kenny Williams scored 17 points.

After shooting 38 percent in the first half against Syracuse, the Tar Heels settled for fewer jumpers in the second and found some soft spots in the zone. Oshae Brissett scored 20 points and made five 3s for Syracuse, which never got closer than nine down in the second half.

Why Bet on Syracuse?

The Orange lost at home to No. 1 Duke on Saturday, 75-65. Jim Boeheim did coach the game despite killing a man earlier last week in a traffic accident. Police Chief Kenton T. Buckner said there was “no reason to believe that there are criminal charges that will be coming for anyone.” Boeheim passed all sobriety and drug tests. The Carrier Dome set an on-campus attendance record for a college basketball game Saturday, with 35,642 in attendance. It surpassed the previous record, also held by Syracuse in a game against Duke, set in 2015. Boeheim’s 42 seasons completed put him first on the list of Division I coaches at their current schools. He’s second on the all-time NCAA list for wins with 944.

Despite the double-digit point production from Tyus Battle (16 points), Elijah Hughes (12 points), Frank Howard (10 points) and Marek Dolezaj (10 points), the Orange were not able to overcome 50 combined points from RJ Barrett (30 points) and Alex O’Connell (20 points) for Duke.

With Syracuse trailing, 58-56 with 6:43 remaining, the Blue Devils earned a 3-pointer and a dunk from Barrett, sandwiched around a dunk from O’Connell that produced a 7-0 run. The Orange were unable to get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Battle’s 16 points gave him 1,560 for his career. He tied Roosevelt Bouie and Todd Burgan for 18th all-time on Syracuse’s scoring list. Battle ranks sixth in the ACC in scoring (17.2 ppg.), and second in minutes (36.42 mpg.). He has reached double figures in scoring in 23 games and has scored 20 or more points 12 times and 30 or more points twice. Brissett eclipsed 900 career points on a layup early in the second half. He now has 904 for his two-year career at Syracuse.

Syracuse is 3-5 against top-25 teams this season.

Why Bet on North Carolina?

UNC knocked off No. 1 Duke last Wednesday and then beat No. 16 Florida State on Saturday, 77-59. Duke’s nine-game winning streak was the longest such string in the ACC at the time, and Duke’s loss left Florida State and its eight-game streak as the best in the league. That ended thank to UNC shooting 48 percent in the second half while holding Florida State to 25 percent shooting after halftime.

The 18-point margin of victory is the largest against FSU this season (previous was 13 against Virginia and Pitt). FSU’s shooting percentage of 30.5 was the lowest by a Tar Heel opponent in ACC play this season (previous .306 by Pitt).

Syracuse vs North Carolina should be a close one.

Carolina came into the game No. 3 in the nation in rebound margin (+9.3 per game) and out-rebounded the Seminoles, 47-32 (+15). The 47-32 rebound margin for Carolina (+15) is the largest against FSU this season. FSU had been out-rebounded only six times; its largest previous rebound deficit this year was -4 against Virginia (32-36).

Cameron Johnson scored in double figures for the 25th time in 27 games. He had his third double-double of the season and the sixth of his career with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Maye had his 11th double-double of the season (29th career) with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

It was the Heels’ 10th game of the season against an opponent ranked in the top 19 of the AP Top 25, and they improved to 7-3 against them. The seven wins are the most for UNC against ranked teams in the regular season since 2007. This is the 26th time overall and the 11th time in 16 seasons under Roy Williams the Tar Heels have won at least 12 regular-season ACC games.
