Favorites To Win 2016 College Football Championship Title

With the top-ranked Alabama looking virtually unbeatable as they march toward their second straight CFB Playoff appearance, the 2016 season has now become a quest to find a team – any team – capable of beating Nick Saban’s powerful Crimson Tide. This look at the online betting favorites to win the 2016 college football championship will highlight the five teams that I feel are capable of beating the Crimson Tide should they meet in the postseason.

Alabama

I hate writing it because I’m no Nick Saban fan, but the fact of the matter is that the No. 1 team in the land is locked and loaded and apparently intent on getting back to the national championship. Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0 SU, 6-2 ATS) has an athletically-gifted quarterback and another powerful defense featuring a nasty front seven that gives opposing quarterbacks and running backs nightmares. Right now, they’re the favorites and rightfully so!

Michigan

Whether you love Jim Harbaugh or loathe him, there’s no denying that he’s one of the best football coaches on the planet. With that said, I’m going to say that the Wolverines (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) are one of the few teams that look like they could pose a legitimate challenge to Alabama’s dominance. The Wolverines have an elite defense that ranks first in the nation in points allowed (10.0 ppg) and could genuinely pose problems for Alabama’s young quarterback and modest rushing attack.

Clemson

Deshaun Watson has been overshadowed by Louisville’s Lamar Jackson this season, but I still believe the Clemson superstar is the best quarterback in this country for several reasons besides his jaw-dropping athleticism. The Tigers (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS) still have an explosive offense that averages 36.5 points per game (34th) and an elite defense that limits its opponents to just 15.2 points per game to rank 10th nationally. Ironically, Clemson may be flying ‘under the radar’ even though they’re ranked third in the AP poll. No matter, the Tigers are still my top pick to dethrone the Crimson Tide.

Ohio State

The sixth-ranked Buckeyes (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) got humbled in their Week 8 loss to Penn State, but the Buckeyes are still on track to reach the four-team CFB Playoff – if they can avoid their second loss of the season. The Buckeyes can explode on people offensively as they rank fifth in the nation in scoring (45.2 ppg) and they still have an elite defense that ranks an identical fifth nationally (14.4 ppg). If the Buckeyes can improve their lackluster rushing attack and get someone other than superstar quarterback J.T. Barrett to make plays, they could very well win it all.

Washington

The Washington Huskies (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) were expected to be a national title contender in the preseason rankings, but I don’t think anyone knew just how good they’d be. Well, let me just say that right now, Washington looks like they could beat any team in the country, Alabama included. The Huskies have one of the best coaches in all of college football in Chris Petersen and both, a high-scoring offense (48.2 ppg, 4th) and an elite defense (14.5 ppg, sixth). Make no mistake about it…the Huskies are dangerous with a capital ‘D’.  

Louisville

The Cardinals (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) have one loss, but that hasn’t stopped voters from ranking them fifth, ahead of unbeaten Nebraska, Baylor and West Virginia and one-loss Ohio State for that matter. Dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson is the singular most difficult player to stop in all of college football and the Cardinals have the most explosive offense in the country (52.5 ppg, 1st). If the Cardinals are going down, it’ll likely be because of their modest 37th-ranked defense (22.7 ppg).
