This game was originally scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. before Hurricane Florence forced the start time to be changed to noon. Officials are projecting tropical-storm conditions approaching the area as early as Sunday. “I don’t think the game will be postponed. I think we’re going to play the game,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said during Wednesday’s ACC teleconference. It is still believed to be shown on ESPN2. Georgia Southern used to be an FCS powerhouse and hasn’t been an FBS program for too long. It is 2-0, coming off a 34-13 rout of UMass. Quarterback Shai Werts engineered a 75-yard touchdown drive late in the first half, snapping a 10-all tie and sparking the Eagles to pull away. Werts threw for 154 yards and two scores while rushing for 83 yards and another score, giving him six touchdowns accounted for in two games. Georgia Southern churned out 334 yards on the ground but averaged 25.7 yards per reception as the Eagles tallied 488 yards of total offense. This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and the Tigers. Georgia Southern is 1-9 all-time against current members of the ACC (1-4 vs. Miami; 0-2 vs. Georgia Tech, North Carolina and NC State; 0-2 vs. Florida State). Georgia Southern has lost its last 11 road non-conference games since shocking Florida 26-20 in The Swamp to end the 2013 season. GS has yet to win a road non-conference game as a member of the FBS, which the Eagles joined in 2014. The Eagles have played nine games against ranked FBS opponents since 1984 but this will be the second ranked opponent GS will take on as a member of the FBS. Clemson escaped at Texas A&M last week, 28-26, as the Aggies couldn’t convert a late 2-point try. Kelly Bryant threw for 205 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score. Clemson (seven) and TCU (six) are the only schools with active winning streaks of six games or more in College GameDay games. Clemson secured its 15th victory in its last 16 true road games. The Tigers extended their winning streak in Saturday games to 18, the longest of any Power Five school in the country. It is the second-longest Saturday winning streak in school history, trailing a 21-game Saturday streak across the 2014-16 campaigns.
Clemson led, 14-3, at halftime. Clemson has now won 54 of their last 56 games when leading at halftime. Clemson led 28-13 after three quarters and is now 75-2 since 2011 when leading entering the fourth quarter. The victory was Clemson’s 15th consecutive win in games played in September.
Here, the Tigers are facing an opponent for the first time for a second straight season, joining the team’s debut against Kent State in a 56-3 win last year. Prior to debuting against Kent State in 2017, Clemson most recently faced a new opponent in 2014, facing both Louisville and Georgia State for the first time and earning victories in both contests.
