Georgia vs Vanderbilt 2019 College Football Week 1 Odds & Game Preview

Written by on August 29, 2019

We had a bit of a mock opening last weekend, but this coming weekend is when college football is back in a big way. The party gets started a little early, with the defending champion Clemson Tigers taking to the field on Thursday night versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Tigers are once again up there as one of the favorites to be vying for a National Championship, which has pretty much been par for the course since we entered into the playoff era of college football.

They are going to have some serious competition again this year, with some of the biggest challengers likely to come from the SEC. The Alabama Crimson Tide will be there, as usual, while the Georgia Bulldogs are another team that really need to be paid attention to. The Bulldogs start the season ranked in the #3 spot and will be looking to make up for missing the playoffs last year, albeit by the slimmest of margins. They will open up on the road against Vanderbilt as a 22-point road favorite. The point total for this one has been set at 58.

Why bet on the Georgia Bulldogs?

The Georgia Bulldogs made it all the way to the National Championship Game 2 years ago, then followed that up with a trip to the SEC Championship Game last season. They eventually lost that one to Alabama, a defeat that cost them another trip to the playoffs. The Dawgs once again lost a lot of players to the NFL during the draft, but under Kirby Smart, this team has been one of the best recruiters in the country.

They will still have Jake Fromm under center, as well as a defense that is totally stifling. The Dawgs are an impressive 15-4 SU in their last 19 games and have taken 8 of the last 10 meetings with Vanderbilt. Better yet, they are 11-1 SU in their last 12 trips to Nashville. Georgia has covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 season openers.

Why bet on the Vanderbilt Commodores?

Vanderbilt proved not to be a total pushover last season, especially in the final few weeks, when they won 3 of their last 4 regular season games, including back to back wins against Ole Miss and Tennessee to close out the season. They did eventually lose 45-38 to Baylor in what was an incredibly entertaining bowl game. The question now is whether they can come out and spring the major upset against one of the top teams in the nation.

Georgia vs Vanderbilt is not going to be a close one.

With just 3 wins in their last 17 meetings with Georgia, it does seem a little unlikely. If you are looking for a betting angle with the Commodores, consider that they have covered in each of their last 5 meetings with an SEC opponent, or that the UNDER has hit in each of their last 5 season openers.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

I don’t think there is any real doubts about Georgia winning this one, which means it’s all about figuring out the margin of victory. The Dawgs are a little weaker at the WR position, so look for them to run the ball a lot, which kills clock. Dawgs to win and cover, with the UNDER.

Score: Georgia Bulldogs 36 – Vanderbilt Commodores 13
