Why Bet on the Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies snapped their two-game SU and ATS losing streaks by beating Boston College 26-10 in Week 9 to cash in as a 3.5-point home favorite. Quarterback Michael Brewer completed 15 of 21 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown and Joey Slye kicked four field goals to lead the Hokies to victory. Defensively, Virginia Tech forced four turnovers in the win and held the ball for almost 10 full minutes more than the reeling Eagles.
“I think it gives us more incentive to win out, to send out this legend in a proper way,” junior defensive end Ken Ekanem said. “It was the right time to announce it if he was going to announce it. We’ve just got to send him out in the right way.”
Why Bet on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets got outscored 17-7 in the second half of their humbling 27-21 loss against Virginia in Week 9 while failing to cover the spread as a 4-point road favorite. Quarterback Justin Thomas completed 13 of 31 passes for 251 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions but the Yellow Jackets lost two costly fumbles while allowing the Cavaliers to keep the ball for nearly 37 full minutes. Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Johnson commented on Beamer’s impending retirement.
“Frank has been an icon in the coaching profession for most everybody for a long time, and he’s done it the right way,” Johnson said. “I think he’s definitely probably a Hall of Famer, and the game will miss him a lot. It’s a high-pressure tough game, and to last as long as Frank has I think speaks volumes for him and what he stands for, and certainly he’s put Virginia Tech on the map football-wise.”
My Expert Game Analysis & Prediction:
I know Virginia Tech got a win the last time out while Georgia Tech suffered a humbling loss, but I like the Yellow Jackets to get back in the win column after watching how well they could play in their 22-16 Week 8 win over Florida State. Georgia Tech holds the slight edge in scoring while Virginia Tech has the edge in points allowed. The Yellow Jackets got a narrow 27-24 win over the Hokies on the road last season and own a solid 6-4 ATS mark against their ACC rivals in the last 10 meetings.
Virginia Tech may be playing for retiring head coach Frank Beamer, but the Hokies are also just 7-15 ATS in their last 22 road games, 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a bye week and a dismal 0-6 ATS in their last six road games against a team with a losing home record. Georgia Tech is 4-1 ATS in their L/5 games following a bye week and 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games. With the Yellow Jackets going 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings, I say the 59 percent of public bettors that likes Georgia Tech to get back in the win column are right on the mark.
