It has been a terrible year at the University of North Carolina, but the Heels can at least head into the offseason with a bit of momentum if they can upset rival NC State on Saturday. However, the bowl-eligible Wolfpack are the NCAAF Betting favorites at Mybookie Sportsbook.

Last Season

NC State beat UNC 33-21 in 2017. Nyheim Hines (now with Colts) rushed for a career-best 196 yards and two long touchdowns, Jaylen Samuels (also in NFL now) added a game-sealing 10-yard score, and Ryan Finley ran for two short scores and was 20 of 30 for 204 yards. Nathan Elliott’s third touchdown pass, a 1-yard toss to Jordan Cunningham, pulled the Tar Heels within six with 8:16 remaining. N.C. State chewed up nearly seven minutes on the drive that ended with Samuels’ score with 1:33 to play. Elliott finished 21 of 45 for 277 yards for the Tar Heels.

Although the Tar Heels hold a 66-35-6 overall lead in the history of the series, the Wolfpack holds the advantage since the turn of the century. Since the year 2000, NC State has won 11 of the 18 games (including 8 of the last 11). Under Dave Doeren, the Wolfpack is 3-2 against the Heels, but 2-0 at Kenan Stadium.

Why Bet on NC State?

The Wolfpack trounced Louisville last week 52-10. After Louisville scored a field goal on its opening possession, NC State scored 45 unanswered points. The 52 points scored were the most on the season, and the most in a road contest since at South Alabama in 2015 (63) and the most in an ACC road game since at Duke in 2001 (55). QB Ryan Finley threw for 316 yards and a career-best four touchdowns. RB Reggie Gallaspy, Jr., scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.

In the second quarter, Finley moved into second place in the NC State record books in career passing yardage. He passed Jamie Barnette and only sits behind Philip Rivers. Finley’s 316 yards vs. the Cardinals put him at 3,180 yards for the season – his third straight season crossing the 3,000-yard passing mark. He is only the second QB in school history to accomplish that feat (Rivers had three in his four-year career) and the fifth in ACC history.

Kelvin Harmon went over 1,000 yards receiving for the second straight season. He is only the third player in school history (Torry Holt, Jerricho Cotchery) to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving twice in his career. Harmon now has 13 100-yard receiving games for his career – the fourth-best mark in school history but just two behind record-holder Cotchery.

With the UNC game left to play, the Wolfpack’s 10 ACC wins over the past two seasons is the most in back-to-back seasons at NC State since 1993-94, when the Pack posted a 10-6 mark. If State is able to gain the 11th victory in Chapel Hill, that will give the Pack the most league wins in consecutive seasons since 1991 & 1992 (11-4). The 2018 Wolfpack squad also has a chance to become just the second team in school history to post double-digit wins.

Why Bet on North Carolina?

This is the season-ender for North Carolina. The Heels got just their second win of the season last week, a 49-26 victory over Western Carolina. Nathan Elliott passed for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Javonte Williams rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns for the Tar Heels (2-8), who ended a six-game losing streak.

Elliott became the 15th quarterback in UNC history to reach 3,000 career passing yards. The redshirt junior has 3,148 career passing yards and moved past Oscar Davenport into 14th on the all-time Tar Heel passing chart.

NC State vs North Carolina should be a close one.

The Tar Heels gained a season-high 654 yards. Carolina passed for 358 yards and rushed for 296, the fourth time this year rushing for more than 200 yards. The 654 yards are the fifth most in a game in UNC history and the third most under head coach Larry Fedora.

The team that has held the rushing advantage in this series has won 23 of the last 26 meetings. The lone exceptions came in 2004 when Carolina won 30-24 but was outgained on the ground, 304-164; in 2009 when Carolina had 159 rushing yards to NC State’s 76 in a 28-27 Wolfpack victory; and in 2013 when State held a 212-152 advantage in rushing but the Tar Heels were 27-19 winners. Last season, the Wolfpack outrushed the Tar Heels 292-83.
