Last Meeting

In 2017, Virginia Tech hosted Old Dominion and rolled to a 38-0 win. The Hokies weren’t always sharp, particularly early on offense, but they did exactly what they needed to do against the four-touchdown underdog Monarchs. ODU got the ball across midfield once — barely. On their first drive, they reached the Hokies 49 and then were immediately rebuffed for a 1-yard loss on fourth down. Quarterback Steven Williams was held to 8-for-26 passing for 85 yards and one interception. ODU had only 149 yards of offense. Virginia Tech had 582 yards. Quarterback Josh Jackson went 20 for 30 for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hokies will be well-rested as their game last week against East Carolina was canceled due to Hurricane Florence. East Carolina decided not to travel to Blacksburg for the game, citing imminent safety concerns before, during and after the storm. ECU said it hoped the game could be rescheduled for later this season. That’s going to be tough. This contest will only be the third true road non-conference game for Tech under Justin Fuente. Virginia Tech won a 64-17 contest at ECU (9/16/17) and twice rallied from 17-point deficits to register a 34-31 win at Notre Dame (11/19/16). The Hokies are 9-2 under Fuente in September games. Since Bud Foster took over as Tech’s defensive coordinator in 1996, VT is 66-1 when holding nonconference foes to 17 points or fewer. That lone setback was a 16-13 loss to No. 3 Auburn in the 2005 Sugar Bowl. Under Foster’s tenure, the Hokies have pitched 34 shutouts, including an FBS-best three in 2017. Despite playing only two games, Tech’s vaunted Lunch Pail Defense is second in the FBS, averaging 11.5 TFL per game. Opponents have made six Red Zone trips against Tech, coming away with only one TD and two FGs. That Red Zone scoring percentage of 50.0% is tied for third among Power Five squads. Saturday marks Virginia Tech’s first non-conference road game in the state of Virginia that wasn’t UVA since 1986 when Tech won 17-10 at Richmond on Nov. 8. The Hokies are 18-6 all-time against opponents in the current configuration of Conference USA. Virginia Tech football will be making its first trip to the Hampton Roads area, a recruiting hot spot, for the first time in 32 years. The 757 has been a major recruiting ground for the Hokies over the years. There are 13 players on the current roster from the Tidewater region.

This is the second game and first home game for ODU against Virginia Tech in a series that will see the two teams play 13 times in the next 14 years. Six of the games will be in Norfolk. Saturday’s game will mark the first time ODU has faced an opponent ranked in the AP Top 25 and it’s the hottest ticket in school history. The Monarchs are 0-8 all-time vs. ACC programs. Tech is 5-0 under Justin Fuente when scoring 40 points or more. ODU has lost 16 straight games when permitting 40+ points dating back to 2014. The Monarchs come off a 28-25 loss last Thursday vs. Charlotte. Old Dominion University took an 18-13 lead on a Lala Davis touchdown in the third quarter but Charlotte scored 16 straight points. The game was moved to Thursday evening due to the impending inclement weather from Hurricane Florence. It was the first Thursday game in ODU’s 10-year history. Steven Williams completed 16-of-28 passes for 215 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Davis carried 10 times for 63 yards and two scores. Jonathan Duhart caught seven passes for 127 yards and his third touchdown of the season. Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion is one of the best games of the NCAA Football Week 4. Sophomore linebacker Lawrence Garner continued his stellar tackling pace in the first three games, notching a game-high 15 tackles at Charlotte. He’s had double-digit tackles in all three games so far this season. With a veteran defensive line, the Monarchs were expected to be stout up front. That hasn’t been the case. Though defensive end Oshane Ximines has been as good as expected, he hasn’t had a lot of help. Losing defensive tackle Miles Fox to a turf toe injury last week didn’t help. Garner has been a bright spot, but the secondary has been shaky, particularly at corner. Old Dominion has made it a habit to not only play close games but win them. The Monarchs are 24-11 all-time in games decided by one score and 11-6 since turning FBS in 2014. ODU is 0-2 so far in one-score games this season.
