Last Meeting

In 2016, a year in which Jacksonville finished 3-13, the Jags lost 19-14 in Kansas City. Nick Foles (now with Eagles) threw for 187 yards and a first-half touchdown toss to Albert Wilson (now with Dolphins) and helped to set up four field goals by Cairo Santos to lead the Chiefs.   The Jaguars couldn’t overcome four turnovers — including a fumble at the goal line in the fourth quarter. Blake Bortles was 22 of 41 for 252 yards and two touchdowns with a pick. His receivers dropped several passes, including an early fourth-down throw that cost Jacksonville a chance at points.

Why Bet on Jacksonville?

The Jags beat the Jets 31-12 on Sunday. Blake Bortles threw two touchdown passes, including a 67-yarder to Donte Moncrief. Bortles ended up with a career-high 388 yards passing, topping 375 yards for the second time in three games. Bortles was sharp in this one, completing 15 of his first 16 passes. His other TD pass was a screen to T.J. Yeldon.

Dede Westbrook caught 9-of-13 targets for 130 yards in the win. Westbrook started fast, racking up six catches for 89 yards in the first half. He led Jacksonville in targets, ahead of both Keelan Cole (3) and Donte Moncrief (5). Westbrook did most of his damage on short passes but was explosive in the open field and picked up most of his yards after the catch.

Safety Tashaun Gipson predicted last week that he would be the first member of the Jaguars secondary to get an interception this season. He looked like a prophet on Sunday when he picked off Sam Darnold — until a penalty on teammate A.J. Bouye wiped it out.

The news wasn’t all good, though, as the top running back Leonard Fournette re-injured his hamstring in the second quarter. Jacksonville gave Fournette a heavy workload early with 12 touches, potentially leading to the setback. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said he doesn’t know how long Fournette will be out. Fournette had an MRI Sunday but the injury appears to be no worse than it was when he was originally hurt in the season opener. He missed two games before returning against the Jets.

The Jaguars play at Dallas after Kansas City before playing host to Houston and then traveling to London for the team’s annual home game in Wembley Stadium. Then it’s the bye, so you might not see Fournette back until then. That means more of Yeldon. He had 18 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 48 yards and a receiving touchdown against the Jets.

Why Bet on Chiefs?

Short week for KC after rallying for a 27-23 win in Denver on Monday night. Leading MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes led his team back from down 10 in the fourth thanks in part to a left-handed throw (he’s a righty) as he was about to get sacked by Von Miller at midfield on the game-winning drive.

Down 23-13, Mahomes directed a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes and culminated with a 2-yard TD toss to tight end Travis Kelce. After a three-and-out by Denver, Mahomes added a 60-yard touchdown drive, handing off to Kareem Hunt for the 4-yard score with 1:39 remaining. He was nearly sacked earlier in that drive by Miller but threw a pass left-handed to Tyreek Hill on third down for a first.

Mahomes completed 28-of-45 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for an eight-yard touchdown, his first score on the ground this season. Mahomes got off to a really rough start, heading into halftime with just 65 yards passing. The Broncos were coming at him from all angles, and Mahomes was running for his life most of the night. His 192 yards passing outside the pocket are the most in the last decade. He also overcame a 2nd-and-30 situation in the fourth quarter with pass plays of 23 and 35 yards.
Jaguars vs Chiefs is one of the best games of NFL Week 5.
Hunt rushed 19 times for 121 yards and one touchdown. Hunt added three catches for 54 yards on four targets. It’s Hunt’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season after six as a rookie. Hunt was stuffed a couple times inside the five-yard line early before later cashing one in from four yards out late in the fourth quarter to cap the comeback. Hunt had three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ first three games but otherwise seemed to be a long way from his rookie season. He had just 168 rushing yards and a 3.2 yard per carry average. He had just one pass reception.

Two injury notes from Monday as WR Sammy Watkins left with a hamstring injury and top pass rusher Dee Ford with a groin injury. Ford was on the injury report with a groin injury after hurting it last week so he’s not likely this week. Watkins went catch-less on one target before leaving midway through the first half.
