Lions at Dolphins NFL Week 7 Odds & Expert Pick

The Detroit Lions come out of their bye week with a bit of momentum as they visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The Lions apparently will catch another break here: Not facing Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Miami was an NFL betting favorite but no longer is.

In 2014, the Lions beat the visiting Dolphins 20-16. Matthew Stafford threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Theo Riddick with 29 seconds remaining. Calvin Johnson had seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. Stafford and Riddick still play for the Lions, while Johnson has retired. Miami’s Ryan Tannehill threw for 215 yards. He’s still with the Fins but won’t be playing here.

Why Bet on Detroit?

The Lions are about as healthy as possible coming off their bye. They entered with some momentum, beating Green Bay 31-23 in their last game. Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes and LeGarrette Blount ran for two scores. Blount had a pair of 1-yard TD runs in the first quarter and Stafford’s 8-yard pass to Marvin Jones late in the second quarter put Detroit up 24-0.

Stafford completed 14-of-26 passes for 183 yards. Good-looking rookie RB Kerryon Johnson exited Week 5 against the Packers with an ankle injury. Johnson was injured at the end of a 24-yard run to set up Kenny Golladay’s short touchdown catch. Prior to leaving, Johnson amassed 70 yards on 12 carries and caught a pair of passes for 15 yards on two targets. The bye came at a great time as Johnson is good to go.

The Lions did get some bad news during the week as they placed CB/KR Jamal Agnew on injured reserve with a knee injury. Agnew suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury against the Packers. A fifth-round pick last year, Agnew was an All-Pro as a punt returner as a rookie.

The Lions will be facing Brock Osweiler on Sunday. Osweiler is 1-2 against Lions coach Matt Patricia (when Patricia was a New England defensive coordinator) in his career, with a 56 percent completion rate, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has never completed more than 60 percent of his passes against a Patricia defense and hit for more than 225 yards in one of three games, a 30-24 win over New England on Nov. 29, 2015, when he completed 23 of 42 passes for 270 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Dolphins won an incredibly wild game last Sunday, 31-28 in overtime as a home underdog vs. Chicago. Jason Sanders hit the winner from 47 yards out as time expired. Twelve contests this season in the NFL overall have been won on the final play of the game, tied for the third-most through the first six weeks of a season since 2003.

Miami’s Brock Osweiler threw for a career-high 380 yards and three touchdowns subbing for Ryan Tannehill, who sat out because of an injured throwing shoulder. Dolphins WR Albert Wilson was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 6 catch, 155 yards and 2-TD day vs Chicago. A whopping 138 of his 155 yards came via after the catch. Wilson is the first Dolphins WR to win the award since Chris Chambers in 2005.

Lions at Dolphins is going to be a tough one for the home team.

It was very strange that Tannehill didn’t play because he practiced most of last week but then was ruled out Sunday morning with a shoulder injury – that jumped the line from Bears -3 to -7. The NFL has opened an investigation into how the Dolphins reported his shoulder injury.

We know for sure that Tannehill won’t play vs. Detroit. Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he’s not sure whether Tannehill will be able to play at Houston on Oct. 25, either. Gase said he believes Tannehill injured his right shoulder during a Week 5 loss, on a fourth-quarter sack-forced fumble by Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

“Anything that has to do with pocket movement, footwork, things like that, he can do everything,” Gase said. “He just can’t throw.”
