Tampa Bay Lightning (5/1)
The Lightning (27-7-2) have the best record in all of hockey – and the look of a team more than capable of winning it all this season. Tampa Bay ranks a stupendous first in scoring by averaging a whopping 4.0 goals per game while also ranking a solid 12th in goals allowed (2.9 gpg). Veteran center Steven Stamkos and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy have both been playing out of their minds all season long. I say back Tamp Bay, like right now!Toronto Maple Leafs (6/1)
The Leafs (23-10-2) rank second in scoring (3.7 gpg) and fourth in goals allowed (2.7 gpg) and look like one of the only teams capable of challenging Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference this season.Nashville Predators (9/1)
The Predators (22-12-2) have struggled a bit to see their stranglehold on the best record in the Western Conference. Still, I have no doubt that the Predators, who rank 15th in scoring (3.0 gpg), but lead the league in defense (2.5 gpg), are going to be one of the very top contenders to win the Western Conference this season.Calgary Flames (10/1)
The Flames (22-11-3) are off to a fast start and they’ve been fantastic at both ends of the ice in ranking sixth in scoring (3.5 gpg) and third in goals allowed (2.7 gpg).
Calgary looks like a team that will challenge for Western Conference superiority this season, but I say use some caution on the Flames.
Winnipeg Jets (10/1)
The Jets (23-10-2) were my preseason to pick to win it all this season and it looks like they’re right on track to challenge. Winnipeg ranks fourth in scoring (3.6 gpg) and 11th in goals allowed (2.9 gpg).Washington Capitals (12/1)
I’ve been seriously impressed with the way Alex Ovechkin and company have been able to avoid the championship hangover so far this season. Washington (20-10-3) has excelled at home (10-5-1-1) and on the road (10-5-1) and they rank third in scoring (3.6 gpg), even though they are giving up 3.1 goals per game (19th). I like the Caps a lot as a 12/1 pick to repeat and believe they’ll challenge Tampa Bay and Toronto for conference superiority.
