Seattle vs San Francisco NFL Game Preview Week 4

Seattle vs San Francisco | NFL Game Preview Week 4

The NFC West might be the best division in football and there’s not going to be an easy game in it all year. It’s a hugely important matchup for 1-2 Seattle on Sunday when the Seahawks visit the 2-1 San Francisco 49ers, who are short favorites on the NFL odds.

Series History

Russell Wilson hit Tyler Lockett for two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Alex Collins ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:49 left to put the Seahawks ahead 26-16. Wilson finished 20 of 36 passing for 171 yards. Lockett had 12 catches for 90 yards. The Niners were up 16-6 early in the fourth. Third-string QB CJ Beathard completed 25 of 37 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown but fumbled late in the fourth quarter for the Niners. He’s no longer with the club.

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Seahawks were 30-17 upset losers at Minnesota last Sunday. The Vikes beat Seattle for the first time with Pete Carroll as coach and Russell Wilson as the quarterback, having lost on the road in each of the last three years to stretch their losing streak to seven. Russell Wilson completed 23-of-32 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown. Wilson added seven rushing yards on three carries. Seattle got behind by halftime and was unable to mount a comeback with multiple drives stalling out after a handful of plays. The Seahawks didn’t score a point in the second half. DK Metcalf led receivers with six catches for 107 yards and a score. Chris Carson had 80 yards on the ground, including a 30-yard touchdown run that gave Seattle a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter. Seattle was held scoreless in the final 41 minutes after Carson’s touchdown despite not turning the ball over. Minnesota controlled the clock, winning the time of possession battle by over 11 minutes. The Vikings scored on six of their first seven possessions, had 453 total yards, and were 9 for 14 on third down, including conversions on six of their first seven third downs. The Seahawks should be welcoming back this week at least some of the players who were unavailable vs. Minnesota, including rookie receiver Dee Eskridge. Also expected back are defensive end Benson Mayowa, who missed last weekend’s game with a neck injury, and safety Marquise Blair, who was a late scratch due to a knee injury. Wilson needs one win for his 100th regular season victory. If it’s Sunday, he would become the fourth fastest to 100 wins (148 games). He needs two touchdowns to pass Vinny Testaverde for 17th place on the NFL’s all-time passing touchdowns list with 276. Wilson needs 426 yards to pass Drew Brees for seventh place for the most passing yards in a quarterback’s first 10 seasons in NFL history with 35,267. Since 2012, including playoffs, Seattle is 653 when leading by four or more points at halftime.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The 49ers staged a big second-half rally last Sunday night but left Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers too much time as the Packers won 30-28 on Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal as time expired. San Francisco had rallied from 17 points down to take the lead. The 49ers seem to perform their best as the contest progresses, scoring 24 points within the final two minutes of the first half of 2021, the most in the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 25-of-40 passes for 257 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He struggled in the red-zone before throwing a go-ahead touchdown to Kyle Juszczyk with under a minute remaining. Garoppolo was taken off the field on a few plays for Trey Lance, who rushed for a one-yard TD at the end of the first half.  The public drumbeat for Lance to be more involved in the offense has gotten louder, but coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear this week that Lance still isn’t pushing Garoppolo for the starting job and that Lance will be sprinkled into the offense when he believes it makes sense. “There’s not a quarterback battle right now,” Shanahan said. “We’re going with our starting quarterback who I think is playing very well. I’m happy that he is, so Trey is not thrown into any situations he has to do too early. If he ever is thrown into that, then I know Trey will deal with that and he’ll get better as it goes, but we have a luxury where we don’t have to do that yet to Trey or to our team.” The Niners are the first team since the NFL merger in 1970 who have had 11 different players score their first 11 TDs of a season. Rookie Trey Sermon rushed 10 times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Sermon was the 49ers’ lead back with Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) sidelined and JaMycal Hasty on IR. Mitchell, another rookie, could return this week. The Niners offense ranks 7th in the NFL with a 3rd down conversion percentage of 47.1% in 2021. Defensively, San Francisco has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in each of the last 23 games, the longest active streak in the NFL, and will face off against Seattle’s running back threat Chris Carson, who has posted a total of 202 rushing yards and three touchdowns through the first three weeks of the season.
