Spain and England Meet Again

Despite what the latest Soccer Betting Odds would suggest, there isn’t a lot to separate Villarreal and Chelsea. The bookmakers have priced the English soccer club as heavy favorites (-133) to claim the 2021 UEFA Super Cup title, while you’re getting odds as high as +360 on Villareal to win the match and hoist only their second international trophy.

This will mark Chelsea’s 50th game against a Spanish opponent in a European competition. Out of those 50 meetings, the Blues managed a 20-17-12 record, which is impressive; however, they have yet to meet Villarreal in competitive action.

This could definitely work in favor of the outsiders, who are unbeaten in their last 15 games in European competition. That run includes three draws and 12 wins. The most recent three outings came against English teams, including Arsenal and Manchester United, who they beat in the UEFA Europa League finals.

Similarly, Chelsea tend to do well against Spanish opponents. They have lost only two of their last 12 outings against a Spanish team in European competition (5-5-2); however, they were unbeaten against Spanish sides (4-2-0) in their quest to the UEFA Champions League title.

As an interesting fact about UEFA Super Cup; this year marks the 18th consecutive time that the game involves either an English or Spanish team. The last time neither nation had a club in the finals was in 2003 (Milan vs. Porto).

English clubs lifted the trophy twice across those 17 UEFA Super Cup matches, while Spanish sides won it on 11 occasions.

Villarreal Count on Moreno

Gerard Moreno was directly involved in 10 goals in 12 games for the Yellow Submarine in the UEFA Europa League, producing seven goals and three assists. Bruno Fernandes, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé were the only three players that were directly involved in more goals than the 29-year-old, with 14, 12, and 11 respectively.

However, Moreno is not the only star player on Villarreal who field a strong roster, capable of confidently taking on any European roster. Of course, the question is whether Villarreal can defeat what seems like a significantly stronger English side.

Chelsea might be the reigning UEFA Champions League champions; however, their road to the title wasn’t very convincing. Nevertheless, they made it past Atletico Madrid (3-0), Porto (2-1), Real Madrid (3-1), and had the luxury of facing Manchester City in the finals, who they beat with a single goal, in what was otherwise a very shaky showing from the Blues.

If we consider only how iffy Chelsea had looked in May, you could definitely make a case for Villareal here, especially at the offered betting odds.

And let’s not forget who is leading Villarreal – Unai Emery. The former Arsenal boss is the perfect man to prepare his men for a faceoff against a Premier League team, where he has spent a year leading Arsenal to a fifth-place finish in the domestic competition and to UEFA Europa League finals in 2018/19.

Villarreal might lack the star players Chelsea have, but the Spanish outfit always work hard to be competitive. We like a goal handicap bet on Villarreal for this match but wouldn’t shy away from placing a smaller wager on a 1-1 draw as well.
