ATP Shanghai History

This year’s tournament marks the 12th edition of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Nikolay Davydenko defeated Rafael Nadal in the finals of the inaugural event, and the tournament has since been dominated by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray, who combined to win all nine tournaments from 2010 to 2018. Medvedev beat Zverev in the final in 2019.

Novak Djokovic’s Absence

Almost all of the top players in the world will be in Shanghai for the tournament, with the exception of one player: Djokovic.

The world No. 1 has played sparingly this year, limiting himself to Grand Slams (he has won three) and select 500 and 1000 level events, but chose to forego competing in Asia as he prepares for the ATP Finals – he’s all but guaranteed to hold the top seed until then.

"Over the years, some of the best support I receive anywhere in the world is in China," Djokovic posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Shanghai has always been one of my favourite tournaments in the season. I will be missing my #NoleFam in China. I hope that I can come back to China in the future and play in front of all of you again."

Djokovic has a 34-5 record at the Shanghai Masters and is a four-time winner. He also won the Nitto ATP Finals in Shanghai in 2008. His absence should leave the door open for Medvedev to repeat or for a new champion to be crowned.

ATP Finals Considerations

Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Medvedev hold the top three spots in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings and are guaranteed to play in the ATP Finals in Mexico next month.

However, the last five spots are up for grabs. As it stands now, Rune (4,710), Tsitsipas (4,615), Rublev (4,515), Sinner (4,465), and Taylor Fritz (3,955) occupy those spots, but Ruud (3,560), Zverev (3,280), Frances Tiafoe (2,690), and Alex de Minaur (2,685) are all in contention.

With 1,000 ranking points available for the winner, someone like Zverev could break into the top eight, supplanting Fritz, if he were to win the event. Tiafoe and de Minaur could also make things interesting with a victory.
