Paris Masters Tennis Analysis & Predictions

The long-awaited 2021 Rolex Paris Masters is set to kick off on Monday, November 1, at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France. It will mark the 49th edition of the tournament, held on indoor hard courts.

Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion, and the current no.2 on the ATP rankings, with 9,540 points, behind Novak Djokovic at 11,340. And while the Russian won here in 2020, it’s worth noting that Djokovic did not attend the tournament last year, making Medvedev’s job slightly easier.

Djokovic and Medvedev Lead The Way

The ATP 2021 Rolex Paris Masters 1000 will feature 56 players, including many of the world’s best players, who will compete for the title, and the final ticket leading into the ATP Finals, slated for November 14-21.

All the eyes will be on the reigning champion Medvedev, who has won the title in 2020, albeit without Djokovic in attendance. Regardless, Medvedev had done an exceptional job here last year, edging out Alexander Zverev with a reverse-sweep (5-7, 6-4, 6-1).

The current no.1 Djokovic has won this Masters five times in his career and is also the only player to defend the title successfully. The Serb won his first Rolex Paris Masters in 2009 and has since added titles in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2019.

Beyond that, Djokovic made it to the finals in 2018 but lost to Karen Khanchanoiv (5-7, 4-6).

When we talk top names, we can’t forget to mention Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, and Matteo Berrettini. They enter the tournament as third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-seeded players.

Outsiders With Something To Prove

While the two ATP rankings frontrunners will get most of the attention at the Paris Masters, the field does not lack other exceptional players. That includes Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Jannik Sinner, and Cameron Norrie, all competing for a spot in ATP Finals.

Sinner, Norrie, and Ruud are in a much better spot to qualify for the ATP Finals out of that group of players. That is largely due to Hurkacz’s poor performance at the Vienna Open, where he lost to Andy Murray.

With how the tournament results have looked over the last couple of weeks, it’s fair to say that one of the outsiders will impress. However, it remains to be seen whether any of them can make it all the way.

Players To Watch Out For

Medvedev looks set to go all the way once more; however, the 2021 U.S. Open champion had had a slightly worrying performance at the Indian Wells, where he slipped against Grigor Dimitrov. Regardless, he has proven before that he is an elite-level player who should never be counted out.

One more thing working in Medvedev’s favor is that the Paris indoor courts are known for being slow. That usually benefits more defensive players such as Medvedev and also Djokovic.

On the other side, these conditions might not work (on paper) for Zverev; however, the German reached the finals last year and is an excellent all-around player. He has the talent to make a deep run and has been in great form of late.

Talking about potential winners, Tsitsipas and Berrettini shouldn’t be excluded. Out of the two, we would give Berrettini a higher chance to make a splash due to the Greek’s patchy form of late, which saw him crash out of Vienna Open in R16 and from the Indian Wells in the QF against Nikoloz Basilashvill.

If you’re looking for a longshot bet, Norrie might be the best pick. He has been exceptional at the Indian Wells and has been showing great form. Although making it past one of the top favorites won’t be easy for the 26-year-old, he has done it before, and with the momentum on his side, everyone should keep an eye on the British tennis star.
