ATP 2023 Croatia Open Odds, Analysis, Betting Favorites, and Predictions

The 33rd edition of the Croatia Open Umag began on Monday. The ATP 250 event is one of three ATP tournaments this week and, thus, has quite a diminished field, although there are some players of note in Croatia this week, including top four seeds Jiri Lehecka, Lorenzo Sonego, Sebastian Ofner, and Roberto Carballes Baena, all of whom received a bye into the second round.

That said, let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Plava Laguna Croatia Open tournament so you can bet against the ATP betting lines.

Past Croatia Open Champions

Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final of last year’s Croatia Open, becoming the third Italian to win the clay court tournament in the last six years. Alcaraz won the year prior. Other past winners include Dusan Lajovic (2019), Andrey Rublev (2018), Fabio Fognini (2016), and Dominic Thiem (2015).

A Look at the Early Results

The first round was almost concluded as of early Wednesday morning, with only a handful of matches left to be played. Fifth seed Christopher O’Connell was upset in straight sets by Hungarian Zsombor Piros, ranked No. 124 in the world. Piros will play wild card Dino Prizmic in the second round.

Plava Laguna Croatia Open Second-Round Betting

Sebastian Ofner (-175) vs. Alexi Popyrin (+137)

Ofner, the third seed in the tournament, meets Aussie Alexei Popyrin in the second round. Popyrin defeated Benjamin Bonzi 6-4, 7-5 in the first round, picking up his first win in four matches.

Ofner, a career-best world No. 52, is just 5-4 on the ATP Tour this season but has been great on the Challenger Tour with back-to-back finals appearances. He also reached the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, proving himself a strong clay court player with victories over Fognini, Sebastian Korda, and Maxime Cressy.

Ofner and Popyrin have split their previous two meetings, with Ofner winning on the hard court and Popyrin winning on the grass. Ofner, including all competition levels, is 37-11 on clay this season compared to Popyrin, who is 11-6. The smart money here is on Ofner.

Jiri Lehecka (-138) vs. Dominic Thiem (+110)

There’s great value in betting on Thiem, the underdog, in this match. He’s a former champion in Croatia and is coming off a straight sets victory over qualifier Facundo Bagnis. Thiem is currently ranked outside of the top 100 but is a former world No. 3 who is 14-13 on clay this season – he’s winless on other surfaces.

Clay has been Lehecka’s worst surface this season, with just a 7-7 record. It’s more of a toss-up than the odds indicate. Expect a three-set affair, at the least.

Croatia Open Tournament Prediction

The draw is pretty wide open with no real clear favorites, but the best money is perhaps Sonego, the No. 2 seed who will face Fabian Marozsan in the second round. A victory there would put him into the quarters against either Albert Ramos Vinolas or Jaume Munar. Ofner or Thiem, if he’s successful against Lehecka, should be favorites in the top half of the bracket.
