French Open qualifiers are ongoing for both the men’s and women’s draw, and we’re only a few days away from the official start of the second Grand Slam of the tennis season.

Nadal Withdraws from the 2023 French Open

Rafael Nadal, who has won 14 of the last 18 titles at Roland Garros, announced last week that he won’t be competing in Paris. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise – Nadal hasn’t played since losing in the second round of the Australian Open in January – but it’ll be strange to play the clay court Grand Slam without the "King of Clay."

His absence, however, opens the door for Novak Djokovic to win his record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam. He and Nadal are tied with 22 titles each. Other players, like Casper Ruud and Holger Rune, now may have a realistic opportunity to win their first Grand Slam.

"It is going to start making other players believe that they can win Roland-Garros – more than two hours ago [before Nadal’s announcement]. That is, for sure, something that the players feel," explained tennis analyst Alex Corretja to Eurosport.

A Chance for Alcaraz to Take the Throne

Carlos Alcaraz has been hailed as the predecessor to Nadal for the better part of a year. The 20-year-old Spaniard is almost just as dominant on clay and became the youngest-ever world No. 1 last season after winning the US Open. Without Nadal at Roland Garros, he has a chance to stake his claim to the title of the best player in the sport.

Alcaraz is coming off a disappointing second-round loss at the Italian Open but won the Madrid Open and Barcelona Open in the weeks prior. He’s 20-2 on clay court this season and 30-3 overall.

Can Anyone Stop Swiatek?

As evidenced by her outright odds (-144), Iga Swiatek is a major favorite to win the women’s draw at Roland Garros. She won the Stuttgart Open a few weeks ago and is the best clay court player on the WTA Tour, having won the French Open in 2022 and 2020.

However, if you’re going to bet on anyone but Swiatek, it should be Elena Rybakina (+640). 

Last year’s Wimbledon champion beat Swiatek on May 17 in the quarter-final at the Italian Open, beat her 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-final at Indian Wells, and knocked her out of the Australian Open in the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
