2023 Winner: Alexander Bublik
2024 Halle Open
The outdoor grass court season is in full swing on the ATP Tour, with the Queen’s Club Championship and Halle Open taking place this week in England and Germany, respectively.
The Halle Open, also known as the Terra Wortmann Open, takes place at the OWL Arena in Halle and features five of the top-10 players in the world, including new world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Bublik, the seventh seed in the tournament, is the defending champion.
Let’s take a look at the top three seeds and highlight some potential early round upsets.
Terra Wortmann Open Top Seeds
Jannik Sinner
Sinner, the 2024 Australian Open winner, lost his third match of the season at Roland Garros in the semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz.
Two of his three losses have come against the 21-year-old Spaniard. Otherwise, Sinner has been practically unbeatable.
He is 33-3 this season and is 14-10 in his career on grass, including 12-5 over the last two seasons.

Alexander Zverev
Zverev has had an interesting season to say the least.
He has been dealing with off-court legal issues for the better part of the last year, but you wouldn’t know it based on the way he has performed.
He is 34-10 this season, has two titles, and reached at least the quarter-finals in eight events.
Zverev had a remarkable run to the finals in Paris, beating Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur, and Capser Ruud before losing to Alcaraz in five sets.
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev hasn’t really been able to recover since losing the Australian Open final to Sinner.
He was up 2-0 in the match before letting the title slip out of his grip.
He is 27-8 this season, but has yet to win a title – he had 20 career ATP Tour titles coming into this season.
Medvedev was also a runner-up at Indian Wells and reached the semi-finals in Dubai and Miami.
He’s a strong grass court player – he was 7-3 on the surface last season – so this could be his time to turn things around.
Terra Wortmann Open Potential Upsets
Arthur Fils +105 vs. Tomas Machac -145
Young guns Arthur Fils, 20, and Tomas Machac, 23, meet for the first time on the ATP Tour this week in Halle.
Fils is ranked just one spot lower than Machac in the world rankings so it wouldn’t be a huge upset if he were to win, yet he is the betting underdog.
Fils is 18-15 this season and 5-3 in his career on grass courts, while Machac is 22-10 this season and 5-4 in his career on grass.
It’s really a toss up that could go either way, but Fils, at plus money, is a good value pick.
Max Purcell +180 vs. Alexander Bublik -260
Bublik is 1-0 against Purcell, although that victory came on outdoor hard courts back in 2018.
Purcell is 10-8 on grass courts over the last three seasons and earned his spot in the Terra Wortmann Open with impressive straight set qualification victories against Alexander Shevchenko and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Bublik retired from his second-round match in Stuttgart last week, so there has to be some questions about his physical health.
2024 Terra Wortmann Open Finals Prediction
Sinner has been so good this year, but his loss to Alcaraz in the final at Roland Garros could affect his confidence.
He can’t win every event in which he participates, which is why I can see someone like Medvedev beating him and winning the top half of the bracket.
The bottom half is wide open, but look for Zverev to have a good week in front of a supportive German crowd.
ATP Pick: Medvedev def. Zverev
