Aleksander Zverev vs Daniil Medvedev
- When: Tuesday, November 16
Aleksander Zverev enters day two of ATP Nitto Finals 2021 with a 1-0 record, as he picked up a win against Matteo Berrettini on Monday. It was a closely-fought battle between two top-10 rated players that unfortunately had to end prematurely.
After Zverev won the first set 7-6 with 9-7 and picked up the first point of the first set, Berrettini retired from the match due to an abdominal injury, which forced him off the field. With that, the Olympics champion picked up a free win and will look to make it two on Tuesday, when he meets Daniil Medvedev.
The German tennis star got off to a strong start to the ATP Nitto Finals 2021 campaign, picking up a 2-1 victory against Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole won the first set (7-6) but proved no match for Daniil Medvedev, who shifted into a higher gear for the remaining two and won with 6-3, 6-4.
Now the two favorites will clash in what promises to be the most exciting match of the Red Group. It will mark their 11th meeting, of which each player won five (5-5).
However, it’s worth noting that Medvedev leads 3-2 in indoor hard courts and is 2-0 against Zverev in 2021. Admittedly, Zverev will be less tired for this match, but fatigue is rarely the difference maker early in the tournament.
Medvedev has been the better player this season and has Zverev’s number, so it’s easy to pick a side for this match.
Prediction: Medvedev to win
Matteo Berrettini vs Hubert Hurkacz
- When: Tuesday, November 16
Although this match is still under question due to Berrettini’s withdrawal from his ATP Nitto Finals 2021 opener against Zverev, there have been no official announcements yet.
Berrettini enters the match as one of the most improved players of the year, having posted a 41-11 record, albeit an underwhelming 1-6 against the top-10 rated players. On a more positive note, his indoors record is at 3-1.
Hubert Hurkacz has been far less convincing this term, posting a 36-20 record; however, he is 4-4 against the top-10, suggesting that he might perform better in tough matches. That was seen in his ATP Nitto Finals 2021 opener, where he made Medvedev work hard for the win and has even won the first set.
Hurkacz came out short in the end, but he has done enough to earn our respect. It’s also worth noting that Hurkacz is 8-3 on indoor matches, has won the title in Metz, and made semi-finals in Paris.
The head-to-head record between Berrettini and Hurkacz shows a 1-1 tie, while Berrettini won their only meeting of the year. With that, it would make sense for the Italian to be considered as the favorite; however, with the form these two have been showing of late, it’s hard to pass on Hubert Hurkacz to bounce back and record his first win at the tournament.
Prediction: Hubert Hurkacz to win
