The second round of the 2023 US Open begins Today with a handful of marquee matches. The first round gave us some great matches and surprising upsets.
In the women’s draw, seventh seed Caroline Garcia was upset in convincing fashion, as was 12th seed Barbora Krejcikova. Top 15 seeds Holger Rune, Karen Khachanov, and Felix Auger-Aliassime are out in the men’s draw.

Ben Shelton, meanwhile, recovered after an opening set loss to beat Pedro Cachin 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Thiem won the only match between these two players, but it was on clay.
Shelton is a slightly better outdoor hard courts player Thiem won his first match on the surface of the season on Monday and will have the home crowd on his side. This could go five sets, but Shelton should have the edge.

Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, beat Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 7-6 7-5 in the first round. This will be the 15th match between the two veterans, with Kvitova holding an 8-6 advantage. They last played in the 2018 WTA Finals. Expect a three-set match between the longtime rivals.
