This WNBA season has featured two teams everyone knew were on a collision course to a matchup in the finals. The defending champion Las Vegas Aces used a dominant offense to steamroll their way to the No. 1 seed. But becoming the first team to win back-to-back WNBA Championships won’t be easy.

The New York Liberty built a superteam last offseason, specifically assembled to win the first championship in league history. The Liberty had a tough battle to get through the semifinals but are now in the spot many thought they would be.

Aces are solid favorites

Las Vegas looked like it could run away with the WNBA until August hit. The Aces entered the regular season’s final month with a 23-2 record. Las Vegas then went 8-5 during August, including a loss to the Liberty in the Commissioner’s Cup Final.

New York ended up winning the season series 3-2. Despite the Liberty’s regular-season edge, Las Vegas is -215 to win the series, while New York is +170.

Liberty Survived Scare

After the final month-and-a-half of the season, New York appeared to be on a fast track to the finals. But the Connecticut Sun made the plays to frustrate the Liberty. In Game 1 of the semifinals, New York was held to a season-low 63 points.

However, the Liberty were able to bounce back and win the series’ final two games by a combined four points. New York has seen Jonquel Jones raise her level of play in the postseason. Jones is averaging 16.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

Breanna Stewart has been the team’s top scorer, averaging 19.8 points per game, but it is well below her regular-season average. The Liberty are 3-4 against the spread in the postseason. Five of New York’s playoff games have gone over the total.

Wilson Has Lived Up to Reputation

Las Vegas forward A’ja Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Year. She also is a former MVP and finished just short of Stewart in the voting to win it again. During the postseason, Wilson has played at the top of her game to make sure the Aces reached the final without much issue.

Wilson is averaging a team-high 25.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. She is also blocking 3.2 shots per contest. Las Vegas has a deep roster that is capable of torturing any opponent.

Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum are both averaging 16 points per game. The Aces will need them to be consistent to keep up with New York. The Liberty struggled to knock down shots against the Liberty in a few regular-season meetings. Las Vegas is 2-3 against the spread in the postseason. The under has gone 3-1-1 in the Aces’ first five playoff wins.
