2019 MotoGP Season Betting Recap

So much went down this season. The champion is already crowned, with Marc Marquez taking the title. What can we expect in 2020? With the 2019 MotoGP Season now in the books, it’s time to take a look back at the MotoGP betting season that was.

2019 MotoGP Season Betting Recap

Spaniard, Marc Marquez won his fourth straight and sixth overall career MotoGP title by recording a season-best 12 wins in 19 races across the globe. Marquez won three of the first five races of the season and then recorded five straight wins in races 13 through 17 before clinching his title with another victory in the season-ending event in Valencia. Still just 26-years-old, Marquez, the Repsol Honda superstar looks like he’s going to go down in history as the greatest of all-time as he nears the all-time record of Giacomo Agostini’s eight career titles.

33-year-old Italian Andrea Dovizioso finished the year as the runner-up for Ducati for the third consecutive year with two wins and nine podium finishes. Still, he finished a distant second to Marquez with 269 points to the champs’ stunning total of 420 points.

24-year-old Spaniard Maverick Viñales finished third for Yamaha with two wins at the Dutch TT and Malaysia. Viñales recorded seven podium finishes while finishing the year third for the second time in his career.

23-year-old Spaniard Álex Rins also recorded two wins on the year to finish fourth overall by winning on American soil in April and taking the British Grand Prix in August. Rins recorded three podium finishes on the year and has improved on his finish in each of the three years he’s been on the MotoGP circuit.

The year’s only other winner was Danilo Petrucci who won the Italian Grand Prix in June. The 29-year-old Italian finished sixth overall behind fifth place finisher Fabio Quartararo. The 20-year-old Frenchman recorded a fantastic, five second place finishes on the year and a pair of third place finishes.

2020 MotoGP Season Preview

With a quick look toward 2020, clearly it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to beat out the supremely gifted Marc Marquez, who, at just 26-years-old, is definitely in the prime of his career. However, Marquez will definitely be challenged and he’s expecting it. After narrowly beating out talented rookie Fabio Quartararo in San Marino in September, Marquez had this to say about his young rival.

“The real winner, who did the best race, was Fabio,” said Marquez.“Fabio showed to all of us – I already knew [this] – that he has the potential, the talent, the bike, the team to fight for the championship next year. And I believe – I will try to avoid this – from now till the end of the season he will be a tough contender, and he will win some races. We will try to avoid this, but I predict next year he will be a tough contender for the championship.”

In addition to a challenge from  Quartararo, Marquez will also be challenged by two other young riders in Viñales and Rins, although I’m predicting that Dovizioso is going to take a slight step backwards following his trio of runner-up finishes. Last but not least, another rider to keep an eye out on in 2020 is 24-year-old Australian Jack Miller after he finished eighth this year while recording five podium finishes.
