The CFL season is quickly heading toward the halfway mark. What that means for teams is that they are quickly figuring out where their strengths and weaknesses are in the lineup. How teams adjust through the middle portion of the season will go a long way to determining which teams compete for the Grey Cup.

The Roughriders are off to a 2-1 start and are likely happy with their progress so far. Things haven’t been easy for Saskatchewan, which is 2-1 against the spread. Saskatchewan needed a goal-line stand to beat Edmonton in the opener and escaped Calgary in overtime two weeks ago.
Everything has gone wrong for the Elks, who are 0-4. Edmonton has only scored more than 13 points in one of its first four games. The Elks’ defense did trouble the Roughriders in the opener. Saskatchewan was breaking in veteran quarterback Trevor Harris in the opener. The Roughriders will win again, but Edmonton will keep the game close.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Blue Bombers bounced back from their first loss of the season last week by taking down Montreal 17-3. Winnipeg’s win, which improved their record to 3-1 on the season, was important because it showed the Blue Bombers could win without their offense shining. Winnipeg, which scored 87 points in its first two games, have one scored 23 in the two games they’ve played since.
The Stampeders, who are 1-2 against the spread this season, haven’t quite found their touch on offense yet. Calgary is coming off a bye and lost its last game 29-26 in overtime. Two of the Stampeders’ three games this season have gone under the total. Calgary will try to slow Winnipeg down but will take a double-digit loss.

Ottawa Redblacks at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The Tiger-Cats haven’t had an easy go of the schedule so far. Hamilton is 0-3, but have played three difficult opponents. The Tigers-Cats are 0-3 against the spread and have seen the number go over the total in two of their three games. Hamilton lost its last game 38-12 despite out gaining Montreal 38-12.
Tiger-Cats quarterback Matthew Shiltz struggled, throwing two interceptions and only completing 53 percent of his passes. The Redblacks got their first win of the season last week by beating up Edmonton 26-7. Ottawa is a more defensive-oriented team and should be able to lean on that to score a second straight twin.

Montreal Alouettes at BC Lions

Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. had a nightmarish week against Toronto last week. He tossed six interceptions in a 45-24 loss to Toronto. BC is still tied for first place in the West Division, but won’t want to opportunities slip away against East Division foes.
Montreal is 2-1 this season and is seeking to bounce back from its first loss. The Alouettes only scored three points in a loss to Winnipeg last week. Montreal should be able to take advantage of some Lions’ mistakes on offense and will keep this game within a touchdown.
