Canadian Football League Week 5 Betting Analysis & Picks

Get ready for a regular four-game slate this week, three of which feature three of the biggest historical rivalries in all of the league. Labour Day always marks the biggest stretches in the CFL, and with a condensed 14-game season, it’s go-time for all nine teams.

Here are my CFL Betting predictions for the remaining three games in Week 5 of the Canadian Football League!

2021 CFL Week 5 Betting Preview

Friday, September 3: Montreal Alouettes at Ottawa RedBlacks

The Alouettes are coming off a rough home opener loss to Hamilton, where quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. struggled mightily. Adams only completed 16/31 of his passes and threw an interception on the night as Montreal only scored 10 points. The Als will be in tough against an Ottawa defense that has been really good under veteran coordinator Mike Benevides so far.

Although Matt Nichols and the RedBlacks offense hasn’t put it all together yet, they don’t need to be great in this matchup to come out on top. Take the home team on Friday night.

CFL Betting Pick: Ottawa RedBlacks 23 – Montreal Alouettes 14

Sunday, September 5: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders

While the Roughriders are the only undefeated team coming into this game, all three of their wins have come at home. They’ve yet to play a team the caliber of Winnipeg, and with the return of running back Andrew Harris, the Bombers are the better team in this matchup. Saskatchewan will come back down to earth a little once they play teams on the road, and I think pundits are jumping on the Riders wagon a little too early here. Take Winnipeg to come into Mosaic Stadium on Sunday and win the Banjo Bowl.

CFL Betting Pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27 – Saskatchewan 24

Monday, September 6: Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Toronto has had an extra week to prepare for this matchup due to their matchup with Edmonton last week due to an Elks-related COVID-19 outbreak.

Although Hamilton’s defense is finally healthy, and they collected their first win of the season last week against Montreal, their offense continues to sputter, and speedy receiver Brandon Banks hasn’t been the game-changer that we’re used to seeing.

The Argos defense should feast on Hamilton, and I like Ryan Dinwiddie’s ball club to spoil the Ticats home opener in the Battle of Ontario on Monday.

CFL Betting Pick: Toronto Argonauts 17 – Hamilton Tiger-Cats 16

Monday, September 6: Edmonton Elks at Calgary Stampeders

Calgary nearly upset Winnipeg last week, and backup QB Jake Maier has looked solid in place of the injured Bo-Levi Mitchell. Maier has thrown for over 300 yards in each of his first two starts and didn’t turn the ball over last week.

The Stamps 1-3 record is a little deceiving, and the Elks have only mustered up one good offensive performance.

Edmonton has historically had their issues winning in Calgary on Labour Day, so I’m going to follow the trends and back Calgary at home in what will be a loud McMahon Stadium.

CFL Betting Pick: Calgary Stampeders 24 – Edmonton Elks 20
