A Closer Look At The Early 2017 ACC Title Bets and Who’s Offering Best Value

Florida State – Even

I’m pretty fired up about Florida State heading into the 2017 campaign mostly because of the eye-opening play of now sophomore quarterback Deondre Francois after he threw for 3,350 yards and 20 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2016. The Seminoles will have to reload at running back after losing superstar Dalvin Cook to the NFL Draft, but Florida State is loaded on the defensive side of the ball and has a championship-winning head coach in Jimbo Fisher.

FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES TEAM STATISTICS

Offensive total yards: 466.38Average Score For: 35.08Offensive rush yards: 202.31Defensive total yards: 349.08Offensive passing yards: 264.08Defensive rush yards: 128.00Average Score Against: 25.00Defensive passing yards: 221.08

Clemson +300

Clemson has been really special for the last couple of seasons, but there’s a reason why they’re not favored to win the ACC title in 2017 and it’s because you just don’t replace a quarterback like Deshaun Watson very easily. Not only that, but the Tigers also lost four other standout starters on offense to the NFL Draft, not to mention star linebacker Ben Boulware, defensive end Carlos Watkins and a pair of starting defensive backs. While Clemson does return seven starters on the defensive side of the ball, the bottom line is that they’ll have a first-time starting quarterback and they will only go as far as that as of yet to be named starter takes them whether it’s junior Kelly Bryant or true freshman Hunter Johnson.

CLEMSON TIGERS TEAM STATISTICS

Offensive total yards: 502.67Average Score For: 39.20Offensive rush yards: 169.00Defensive total yards: 311.47Offensive passing yards: 333.67Defensive rush yards: 129.60Average Score Against: 18.00Defensive passing yards: 181.87

Louisville +300

The Cardinals went 9-4 a year ago, but have arguably the most unstoppable quarterback in all of college football in 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Louisville needs help along the offensive line and will have a new starting running back and pair of wide receivers in 2017.  There is some more good news in the fact that Bobby Petrino has seven starters returning on the defensive side of the ball, but they’ll need to force more turnovers after finishing outside the top 100 with -7 turnover differential.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS TEAM STATISTICS

Offensive total yards: 532.69Average Score For: 42.54Offensive rush yards: 242.15Defensive total yards: 323.15Offensive passing yards: 290.54Defensive rush yards: 116.08Average Score Against: 23.77Defensive passing yards: 207.08Hurricanes had a solid 9-4 campaign a year ago, but will have a new starting quarterback to try winning this season ACC title.

Miami +650

The Hurricanes had a solid 9-4 campaign a year ago, but will have a new starting quarterback with Brad Kaaya off to the NFL, whether that’s redshirt junior Malik Rosier or incoming four-star recruit N’Kosi Perry. Either way, a first-time starter generally struggles, so Miami could take a step backwards in Mark Richt’s second season at his alma mater. The Canes do has a pair of stars in running back Mark Walton and wide receiver Ahmmon Richards, a player that led all freshmen in receiving yards nationally and broke Michael Irvin’s 31-year-old school record in the process.Defensively, Miami has to replace four starters, but they should be excellent at linebacker after starting a trio of true freshmen a year ago. The secondary needs to be rebuilt a bit, so that could be a problem at least early on.

MIAMI HURRICANES TEAM STATISTICS

Offensive total yards: 425.92Average Score For: 34.31Offensive rush yards: 151.77Defensive total yards: 344.15Offensive passing yards: 274.15Defensive rush yards: 130.38Average Score Against: 18.54Defensive passing yards: 213.77

Virginia Tech +650

The Hokies had a fine first season under head coach Justin Fuente in going 10-4 last season, but they’ll also have a first-time starter at quarterback after losing Jerod Evans, not to mention a new starting wide receiver and tight end. The Hokies need some improvement at running back and need to find out if either, junior college recruit A.J. Bush or true freshman Hendon Hooker will start under center.  The good news for the Hokies is that they’re very experienced at linebacker and in the defensive secondary and should be solid again on that side of the ball after finishing 2016 ranked an impressive 28th in points allowed (22.8 ppg).

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES TEAM STATISTICS

Offensive total yards: 444.93Average Score For: 35.00Offensive rush yards: 183.07Defensive total yards: 340.71Offensive passing yards: 261.86Defensive rush yards: 140.50Average Score Against: 22.79Defensive passing yards: 200.21Overall Analysis: Clearly, Florida State is offering the best value of any ACC team heading into 2017, simply because they have the most – and best – talent on both sides of the ball. I like Louisville to challenge and Clemson as my third pick to win the conference.
