Why Bet on Appalachian State?

The Mountaineers (3-2, 1-0) are off a 17-3 win over Georgia State. Jalin Moore ran for a 45-yard touchdown to break a scoreless tie in the third quarter and Appalachian State intercepted four passes. Moore finished with 159 yards on 28 carries for Appalachian State, which has now won 14 of its last 15 conference games and returns 17 of 22 starters from last year's 11-2 squad. App played their first scoreless, opening half in over 20 years in the win. Moore broke the scoreless tie with a 45-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter to give the Mountaineers all the points they would need in the win. The last time App was involved in a 0-0 game at the break was in a 10-3 win over Marshall in 1995 when current head coach then-quarterback Scott Satterfield had a 5-yard TD run to seal an App State win in Huntington, W.Va. App controlled the second half, holding the ball for 20:09 and outgaining GSU 241-108. App held a 16-8 edge in first downs in the second half as well. Linebacker Eric Boggs led the team with a team-high 10 tackles and an interception. Cornerback Mondo Williams, safety Alex Gray, and Brandon Pinckney – on the game’s final play – all had interceptions. Boggs is sixth in the Sun Belt and 28th nationally with 9.6 tackles per game. He’s hit double figures in tackles in four games this season. “He’s a smart linebacker,” App State defensive coordinator Nate Woody said. “You have to recognize a lot of formations and find the gap the running back is going to hit. Eric does a good job of that and also steps out and is effective in the pass game. He has been very consistent for us from the first time he stepped on the field. His experience helps him improve each week.” Last year, App State beat ULL 28-7. Highlighting the dominant defensive effort, Appalachian State surrendered just 42 rushing yards on 36 carries (1.2 yards per attempt), tallied nine tackles for loss, sacked UL Lafayette quarterback Brooks Haack six times and hurried him eight times. The Mountaineers allowed just 171 yards, forced eight punts and blocked a field goal through UL Lafayette’s first nine possessions.

Why Bet on Louisiana Lafayette?

The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-3, 1-1) come off a 37-31 loss at New Mexico State in double overtime. The Ragin’ Cajuns missed a field goal on the first possession of the second overtime. Then New Mexico State’s Larry Rose III fumbled just before the goal line and Sebastian Anderson, an offensive lineman, recovered it for the winning score. Anthony Jennings threw for 143 yards and a score for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Stevie Artigue connected on a game-tying 47-yard field goal with 2:58 remaining in regulation for Louisiana before the game went to overtime at 24-24 when Parker Davidson missed a 20-yarder at the buzzer. NM State took a 31-24 lead on its first possession in overtime as Tyler Rogers hit Gregory Hogan with a 23-yard TD pass before Louisiana answered when Darius Hoggins recovered his own fumble in the end zone after a 10-yard run. Hoggins led Louisiana with 81 yards on the ground with Al Riles catching eight passes for 110 yards. Jennings was 12-for- 23 for 143 yards and a touchdown for Louisiana while Jalen Nixon was 8-for- 13 for 84 yards while rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries. Jennings is a big (6’2, 230), physical player that gives the Ragin’ Cajuns’ run game, essentially, an extra running back. The Ragin’ Cajuns average 180 yards per game on the ground and are averaging 230 per game in Sun Belt play. Nixon replaced Jennings late in the first half of the New Mexico State game but suffered a broken ankle in overtime, leading Coach Mark Hudspeth to say that Jennings will be the team’s quarterback moving forward. Before slipping to 4-8 last year, the Ragin’ Cajuns had four consecutive nine-win season. With the LSU transfer Jennings at quarterback and 2014 Sun Belt player of the year Elijah McGuire at running back, the talent belies a record that’s the product of a four-overtime loss at Tulane and the two-overtime loss at New Mexico State in the previous two games.
