Why Bet on Austin Peay?
Austin Peay cracked the STATS FCS Preseason Top 25 poll for the first time. The Governors are ranked No. 22 in the preseason poll. Being nationally ranked was welcomed by third-year coach Will Healy. The next step for the Governors, he said, is to earn their first trip to the FCS playoffs. They finished second in the OVC last year behind Jacksonville State and did not get into the playoffs. The Governors should have a good ground game. Last year’s leading rusher Ahmaad Tanner returns after rushing for 697 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017. Kentel Williams, who rushed for 674 yards and two scores last season, also returns, as do a host of talented contributors. Tre Nation, Prince Momodu, and Daryl Rollins-Davis, each of whom saw significant time in 2017, have looked impressive in camp, as has freshman Jalyn Shelton. However, gone is Kyran Moore, who had 56 catches and 918 receiving yards over the last two seasons after moving from defensive back. He was quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall’s favorite target. Replacing Moore and establishing a go-to receiver will be a challenge. Candidates include D.J. Montgomery, who was the Governors’ second-leading receiver (19 catches, 228 yards, 3 TDs) last season; Kadeem Goulbourne, who has seven career starts; and Gorel Soumare, a 6-3 sophomore who had 13 catches for 177 yards last season. Oatsvall is back but Healy said he will continue to give JaVaughn Craig significant playing time at QB. Craig played in 11 games last season. The defense will be led by the duo of end Jaison Williams and linebacker Gunnar Scholato, who both earned Preseason FCS All-America honors. Williams, a junior, has been named to the second team while Scholato, a senior, has been named to the fourth team. Williams led the team and finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference with 9.5 sacks. He compiled 44 total tackles, including 11.5 for loss, and tied the program record with four forced fumbles. He also led the team with 13 quarterback hurries on the 2017 season. Scholato led the Governors in tackles for the second-straight season, racking up 99 total stops, including a team-leading 12 behind the line of scrimmage. Why Bet on Georgia?
Georgia will be excellent again but did lose some key players off last year’s SEC champions, mainly running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel and Butkus Award-winning linebacker Roquan Smith. The team should be fine at tailback with sophomore RB D’Andre Swift, who led the SEC in the highest percentage of runs exceeding 10 yards at 22.5% in 2017. Michel (21.3%) and Nick Chubb (18.9%) checked in at second and third. With both Michel and Chubb in the NFL, Swift is inheriting an offense missing 379 carries. The team did lose 5-star freshman tailback Zamir White to a season-ending ACL injury in a recent scrimmage.
Starting QB Jake Fromm returns after an amazing freshman season. He ranked ninth nationally in passing efficiency (160.1) and had the third-most passing yards in a single season (2,615) by a UGA freshman. If Fromm struggles at all, the Dawgs have mega-recruit freshman Justin Fields waiting.
The NCAA has approved Georgia redshirt sophomore WR Demetris Robertson’s hardship waiver for immediate eligibility this season. Robertson (6’1/180) ranked as Rivals’ No. 8 overall prospect in the 2016 class. He initially signed on at Cal, where he immediately jumped out to a 50-767-7 receiving line his freshman year. That promising beginning to his collegiate career would take a tough turn after he was lost for the 2017 season due to a lower-body injury just two games into the campaign.
Georgia has maybe the nation’s best kicker in Rodrigo Blankenship. He was perfect last season on field goal tries from inside 40 yards, connected on 20 kicks total, made 6 of 9 attempts beyond the 40-yard mark and didn’t miss a PAT in 63 tries. His 55-yard kick against Oklahoma that changed Georgia’s Rose Bowl fortunes just before the half.
