The Cougars lost at Cal last year 37-3 when Wazzu was unbeaten and No. 8. Camryn Bynum had two of California’s five interceptions against Washington State QB Luke Falk. Cal was just 1-52-1 against top-10 teams since 1978, with the only win coming over No. 3 Southern California in 2003 before breaking through against mistake-prone Washington State. The Cougars committed three turnovers in the first half, missed a field goal and had a 1-yard punt in the final minute of the half that set up a touchdown that made it 17-3 at the break.Cal leads the all-time series with Washington State, 47-27-5, and has won 11 of the last 13 meetings. Washington State was a 56-21 winner the last time the teams played in Pullman in 2016, snapping Cal’s five-game win streak in the Palouse.

The Bears are looking to get bowl eligible. The Bears were upset winners last week over No. 15 Washington, 12-10. A 37-yard interception return for a touchdown by Evan Weaver provided the eventual game-winning points. Cal (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) held Washington to just 250 yards of total offense and Weaver had 11 tackles to go with his game-winning score.Cal forced two turnovers without allowing one of its own and limited Huskies quarterback Jake Browning to just 159 yards of passing. Weaver was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. He ranks fifth in the country with 6.5 solo tackles per game and tied for 17th in total tackles with 10.8 per contest.
The Golden Bears picked up their first victory over the Huskies since 2015, and their first win over Washington in Berkeley since 2008. The last time Cal won a game without an offensive touchdown was on Sept. 26, 1998, when Cal defeated Washington State, 24-14, with three defensive touchdowns. The 10 points scored by the Huskies are their fewest this season after entering the game with an average of 28.6 points per game.
Patrick Laird needs 340 rushing yards to become the third rusher in Cal history to rush for 1000 yards in multiple seasons (Marshawn Lynch, Russell White). White hit the mark three times (1990-92) and Lynch twice (2005-06). Laird also enters Saturday’s game needing 148 to get to 2000 in his career.
Cal is allowing 22.2 points, 146.5 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game. Those numbers are all significantly lower than the last season before Justin Wilcox arrived in 2017 (42.6, 272.8, 245.4).

Washington State was ranked No. 8 in the first CFP Top 25 and thus could make the playoff if it wins out. The Cougars won a wild one over No. 24 Stanford last week 41-38. Gardner Minshew completed his first 19 passes of the second half and drove Washington State to a 42-yard field goal by Blake Mazza with 19 seconds remaining to put the Cougars in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 North. It was WSU’s 1st game-winning kick in the final minute since Andrew Furney’s game-winning field goal in overtime of the 2012 Apple Cup.Washington State trailed by 14 points late in the first half before rallying behind Minshew for the win. Minshew completed 40 of 50 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars (7-1, 4-1 Pac-12) to their third straight win over the Cardinal.
Minshew has been named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award. He leads the nation in passing yards (3,183), passing yards-per-game (397.9) and total offense-per-game (403.9). The graduate transfer from East Carolina is fifth in the country with a Pac-12-best 26 touchdown passes and also leads the country with five games of 400+ passing yards.
WSU has won 11 straight home games, the 3rd-longest streak in program history, longest since 1928-33 (19). WSU has rushed for 15 TD through 8 games after rushing for 8 TD all of last season. WSU running backs lead all Pac-12 running back groups with 19 total TD and 82 receptions. Finally, the Cougars are third the country with 17 scoring drives of 10+ plays this season, the most among Power-5 teams.
