College Football Week 9 Odds, Expert Picks & Previews

Remember David Cornwell? He was once a touted QB recruit at Alabama but never saw the field. Cornwell is now at Nevada and this week, head coach Jay Norvell said that the starting job is Cornwell’s to lose. Cornwell’s competition for the starting spot will be incumbent Ty Gangi. Here are two interesting College Football betting picks for Week 9.

College Football Week 9 Odds, Expert Picks & Previews

Utah Utes at Oregon Ducks

When: Saturday, Oct. 28, TBA Where: Autzen Stadium, Eugene TV: TBA Stream: TBA Radio: ESPN 700 AM (Utah) / 102.9 FM (Oregon) Opening College Football Week 9 Lines: Oregon -3 That line is my projection. This could be a Pac-12 title game preview. I wouldn’t call it likely as USC isfavored to win the Pac-12 South and Washington is the team to beat in the Pac-12 North, but it’s certainly within reason the Utes and Ducks could win those divisions, respectively. This will also be an interesting homecoming for new Utah receiver Darren Carrington, a former Oregon star. Carrington, who led the Oregon Ducks in receiving yards in 2016, has transferred to Utah. However, trouble has followed him around. He was dismissed from Oregon earlier in July following a DUII charge in which he allegedly collided with a pole while in the drive-thru of a McDonald’s. This past fall, the Oregonian reported that he’d been accused of breaking the arm of an Oregon graduate but was never charged.

What Happened at the End?

To summarize, he sat out Oregon’s appearance in the 2015 College Football Playoff championship game for failing an NCAA drug test and also missed the first half of the following season because of it. He will also join the program as a graduate transfer and be immediately eligible with one season left. The speedster had made 112 catches for 1,919 yards and 15 touchdowns across three seasons at Oregon. Additionally his 606 receiving yards led the team during the 2016 campaign and his five TD receptions were tied for the most with Charles Nelson and Pharaoh Brown.

Taggart Takes Over Oregon

Oregon has new coach this year in Willie Taggart, formerly of USF. The Ducks will debut a new 3-4 defense under coordinator Jim Leavitt, and an offense built to get back to Oregon’s high-scoring ways behind quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Royce Freeman, as well as five offensive linemen with significant starting experience . Freeman decided not to turn pro. He was the Ducks’ leading rusher this season with 945 yards in 11 games. Freeman has rushed for 4,146 yards over three seasons with the Ducks, second only to LaMichael James (5,082 yards) on Oregon’s career rushing list.

Last Meeting

Utah ranks 12th last season when it hosted Oregon in mid-November and the Utes lost 30-28. Herbert hit Carrington for a 17-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining and he led the Ducks on a 10-play, 75-yard drive in just over two minutes. The Utes had taken a 28-24 lead with 2:18 remaining off a Troy Williams 30-yard touchdown pass but the Ducks then began their comeback drive. The normally stout Utes defense gave up 575 yards of offense to Oregon.

Are the Buckeyes a safe bet for College Football Week 9?

Penn State Nittany Lions at Ohio State Buckeyes

When: Saturday, Oct. 28, 3:30 PM ET Where: Ohio Stadium, Columbus TV: Fox Stream: Fox Sports Go Radio: Penn State Sports Network (Penn State) / WBNS Columbus 1460 AM (Ohio State) Opening College Football Week 9 Lines: OSU -7 The Buckeyes will definitely have payback on their minds here. They were denied a shot to play for the Big Ten title last year thanks to a 24-21 upset loss at Penn State as the nation’s No. 2 team that put Nittany Lions back on the national map. Grant Haley returned a blocked field goal 60 yards for a touchdown with 4:27 left in the fourth quarter and the Nittany Lions sacked J.T. Barrett twice on Ohio State’s final possession. It was PSU’s first win against Ohio State since 2011, first victory over a ranked team under Coach James Franklin, first over a Top 5 team since 1999 against Arizona, first against a Top 2 team since 1990 (No. 1 Notre Dame) and first at home against a team ranked so high since 1982 against No. 2 Nebraska. Penn State would also go on to win the Big Ten East Division in a tiebreaker over Ohio State, but the Buckeyes and not the Nittany Lions got into the College Football Playoff. In conclusion, both teams lost their bowl games, with OSU getting stomped by Clemson and Penn State losing a wild shootout to USC in the Rose Bowl.

Lions Missing Top WR

PSU has the best offensive duo in the conference in QB Trace McSorley and RB Saquon Barkley. However, there were few receivers like Chris Godwin across college football last year and he’s now in the NFL. He had 59 catches for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. “You look at the 50/50 balls, that was kind of Chris Godwin’s deal,”Franklin said. “He was as good as any guy I’ve been around in terms of winning those 50/50 balls.” The winner of this game should be considered the favorite to win the East Division in 2017, although both have to play Michigan.
