Hawaii vs Colorado State NCAAF Week 1 Game Preview

Written by on August 22, 2018

The usual order of business in college football is that we get a few weeks of non-conference games before the Power 5 big boys start going head to head in the middle of the season. That is not the case in the smaller conferences, though, and some of them don’t even wait until the official opening week of the season to get the ball rolling. This coming Saturday, August 25, we will have 4 games on the College Football betting action in what has become known as Week 0. It’s a bit of a prelude to all the action coming the following week, but it’s a whole lot of fun for those of us who can’t wait to start watching and wagering on college football. One of the games on tap this coming Saturday will feature a pair of Mountain West Conference teams who play in different divisions. Hawaii will be on the road representing the West versus the Colorado State Rams of the Mountain Division. It’s a match-up that delivered a very one-sided result last season, but are we going to get more of the same in 2018?

Oregon State vs Ohio State NCAA Football Week 1 Odds

Why bet on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors?

The Rainbow Warriors are coming off of what was a bit of a disastrous season in 2017, going just 3-9, which included only 1 win on the road. There is the distinct possibility that things might be even worse this season for Hawaii, as they lost all of their best offensive players in the offseason, which means making sweeping changes across the board. Cole McDonald, who made just 9 pass attempts last season, will be in as the new starting QB and could be in for a bit of a nightmare start against a team that beat Hawaii 51-21 last season, taking the Rainbow Warriors losing streak against the Rams to 7 games. Given the nature of that defeat last season and the changes made, it is perhaps a little surprising that Hawaii is just 14 ½ point dogs here. It’s also worth noting that they failed to cover the spread in 6 road games last season.

Why bet on the Colorado State Rams?

Is Colorado State a safe bet in Week 1? The Rams are another team who will have a bit of a new look this season, as they have no less than 8 starters gone from last year. They should still be in good shape here, though, as this is a team that they have dominated in recent meetings, winning by an average of close to 20 PPG over the last 4 meetings. The Rams were just 4-9 ATS last season, and just 1-6 ATS in their home games. They are very much a solid bet SU, though, when in as a double-digit favorite like they are here, going 17-1 SU in their last 18 such games. The point total for this one is set at 55, which may give us a rather nice wagering opportunity. In their last 11 home openers, the Rams have seen the UNDER hit 8 times.

Expert Pick and Score Prediction

While both teams will look a little different this season, I believe that the Rams still have a huge edge in talent. I like Colorado State to win this one comfortably, and I also really like the UNDER. Score: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 7 – Colorado State Rams 35
