Last year, OSU won 56-14 at Nebraska. JT Barrett passed for five scores and ran for two and OSU scored on its first eight possessions. Ohio State rolled up 633 total yards and had 41 first downs while scoring the most points by a Nebraska conference opponent in Lincoln and most overall by any opponent there since Minnesota won 61-7 in 1945 when the Huskers were in the Big Six.

 

Since Nebraska joined the Big Ten for the 2011 season, the Buckeyes and Cornhuskers have met four times. Ohio State owns wins in three of those contests. Overall, the Buckeyes lead the all-time series 5-1 (Ohio State also won games in 1955 and 1956). Nebraska and Ohio State have combined for 1,800 all-time victories entering Saturday’s matchup. Ohio State is second all-time with 905 victories, while Nebraska’s 895 wins ranks fifth in college football history.

The Huskers are playing much better since an embarrassing 0-6 start and come off a 45-9 rout of FCS school Bethune-Cookman. It was a makeup game for a season opener for Nebraska that was canceled against Akron due to weather.

 

Quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 15-of-22 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, and JD Spielman returned a punt for 77 yards and a touchdown. Martinez increased his season total to 1,656 passing yards, setting a Nebraska freshman record. The previous record was 1,632 yards by Taylor Martinez in 2010.

 

Senior receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. caught first-quarter touchdowns of 3 and 27 yards to give Nebraska a comfortable lead. He caught seven passes for 82 yards, all in the first half. It marked the second straight game Morgan has had two touchdown catches and gives him 20 career touchdown receptions. Morgan is the fourth player in Nebraska history with 20 career touchdown catches, joining Johnny Rodgers (25), Nate Swift (22) and Kenny Bell (21).

 

Nebraska sophomore receiver JD Spielman is just the third player in school history with a pair of 50-catch seasons, including 53 receptions in 2018. Senior Stanley Morgan Jr. could join the group with six receptions on Saturday against Ohio State. Senior running back Devine Ozigbo rushed 11 times for 110 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown to begin the game. Ozigbo did not play in the second half. It marked the fourth time in the past five games Ozigbo has topped 100 yards and his seventh career 100-yard rushing game.

The Buckeyes were off last week. Probably a good thing off a stunning 49-20 loss at Purdue the Saturday before. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins continued his record-setting season, establishing school records for single-game completions, attempts and yardage as he finished the night 49-for-70 for 470 yards. Haskins completed 30 or more passes for the third straight game. He also threw for 300 or more yards for the third straight contest. Haskins is 252 yards shy of moving into third place at Ohio State in single-season passing yardage.

 

Haskins’ 30 touchdown passes rank No. 1 nationally and his 2,801 passing yards rank third. Haskins’ top two targets through the air have been WRs Parris Campbell (52 receptions, 600 yards, seven TD) and K.J. Hill (49 receptions, 656 yards, four TD). Campbell and Hill are third and fourth, respectively, in the Big Ten Conference in receptions.

 

Nebraska at Ohio State should be an easy victory for the Buckeyes.

 

Hill caught a pass for the 28th straight game vs. Purdue. He also has at least four receptions in every game this season. Terry McLaurin needs only 52 more receiving yards for Ohio State to have its first trio of receivers with 1,000 career yards. Campbell and Hill have already topped 1,000.

 

Ohio State is 5-0 under Urban Meyer following a regular season loss. Only five times in 17 years and 213 games has Meyer’s teams lost consecutive games.

 

Nebraska will be looking for its first win over a ranked opponent since a win over No. 22 Oregon in Lincoln in 2016. It would also be the highest-ranked team Nebraska has defeated since a 39-38 win over No. 6 Michigan State in 2015. The Huskers’ last road win over a ranked opponent was a 17-14 win at No. 12 Penn State in 2011.
