I’ve got a trio of great reasons why should you consider backing Clemson’s betting odds once the 2017 college football postseason gets underway. Let’s get to them.

They’re Still Elite Defensively

While the names have changed a bit over the last couple of seasons, Clemson is as almost good as they ever have been defensively this season. The Tigers rank a stellar eighth in total defense (297.6 YPG), a solid 20th against the pass (184.9 YPG), an impressive 11th against the run (112.7 YPG) and an outstanding seventh in points allowed nationally (15.0 PPG). Clemson has a phenomenal defensive line that has more depth than arguably any other team in the country, including Alabama and the Tigers, have now mastered the same attacking style they’ve used to produce massively jaw-dropping results in each of the last two-plus seasons. Clemson has sent a wave of elite defensive players to the NFL in recent season including, most recently, cornerback Cordrea Tankersley, defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, defensive ends Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd, cornerback Mackensie Alexander and 2016 NFL sack leader, linebacker Vic Beasley. The Tigers are as good as it gets when it comes to playing lockdown defense the last few seasons.

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Syndrome

One of the best reasons to bet on Clemson come playoff time is that, to be blunt about it, outside of unbeaten Alabama, Miami and Wisconsin, every other team in the College Football Playoff chase has been beaten and most of them, including the Tigers, have suffered at least one ‘ugly’ loss. Clemson took an ugly 27-24 loss to lowly Syracuse on the chin but beat Auburn, who in return, also lost to LSU, but somehow managed to pound No. 1 Georgia into submission just last weekend. Ohio State got smacked early in the season at home no less, by Oklahoma and got beaten senseless by Iowa, which, for some reasons still hasn’t eliminated the Buckeyes from the CFP in some people’s minds. Can the Tigers roar during the 2017 NCAAF Postseason? Penn State was on track for an apparent berth in the playoffs but then took a stunning comeback loss from the same Buckeyes team that Iowa embarrassed. Not to mention a heartbreaking road loss at Michigan State one week after that. The Spartans got routed through Ohio State while USC got smash away by Notre Dame, which was blown out of the water this past weekend by Miami. Whew, my head is spinning. To make a long story short, there’s no team that you can really lay claim to as deserving to be in the CFP more than Clemson outside of unbeaten Alabama and Miami, and for me, unbeaten Wisconsin as well.

The Dabo Effect

Last but certainly not least, here’s what I like to call the ‘Dabo Effect’ going for the Tigers. Since taking over at the ACC powerhouse in 2008, all Swinney has done is win games. The now, beloved and widely respected head coach has recorded seven straight winning seasons, including consecutive 14-1 seasons in each of the last two years. Swinney went 11-2 in both, 2012 and 2013 and has made consecutive appearances in the national championship in each of the last two seasons while winning it all last year after coming up agonizingly short in 2015. More importantly, for me, I don’t think there’s a better motivator in all college football than Swinney, who, I truly believe could get the vast majority of his players to literally run through a brick wall for him. So, there you have it, a trio of great reasons to back the defending national champions during the 2017 NCAAF Postseason!
