The FIBA Basketball World Cup takes place in China from August 31 through September 15. As we might expect, Team USA is a major favorite to win the hoops tournament. Although it will be difficult for any team to upset the United States, Serbia, Spain, France, and Greece are getting some attention. USA
The United States plays in Group E along with Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Japan. Although plenty of NBA stars will put on the USA uniform for the tournament, Team USA isn’t as star-laden as we might expect.
The roster includes Anthony Davis and James Harden. But, LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard will skip the festivities. So will Paul George, Russell Westbrook, and Steph Curry. Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson can’t play due to injuries.
Giannis Antetokounmpo will suit it up for Greece. Joel Embiid and Kyle Irving won’t play either. In fact, of the 10 starters in this year’s NBA All-Star Game, only Davis, Harden, and Kemba Walker will attend. That means Team USA might not be the no can lose wager to win they often are in tournaments like this.
Serbia
Group D includes Angola, the Philippines, and Italy. The Serbians should have an easy time dominating in their group. The real key for Serbia will be how well the team plays around Nikola Jokic. Jokic averages 20.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game in the NBA.
If Serbia battles Team USA, Jokic can hang with any player the United States throws at him. If the rest of the Serbs play well, and the U.S. has a down day if or when they meet Serbia, who knows? We must take this squad seriously as a contender.
Spain
The Spanish will be without Pau Gasol. Gasol had knee surgery recently. He won’t step onto the courts in China. Even without Pau, Spain should win Group C over Iran, Puerto Rico, and Tunisia. After that? Spain has plenty of NBA stars on the roster to give both Serbia and the United States some trouble.
Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, and Ricky Rubio are in the starting 5. Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Lull are excellent players in the Spanish League. Spain is so deep that they can bring Nikola Mirotic off the bench. The Spanish will field a very good basketball time.
France
The French could be a force in the tournament as well. Like Spain, France will be lead by three NBA players: Rudy Gobert, Nikolas Batum, and Evan Fournier. Gobert and Batum can dominate on some nights while Fournier is a solid all-around player.
France will win Group G. Their opponents are the Dominican Republic, Germany, and Jordan. If France gets hot, there’s no telling what might happen.
Greece
Led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, Greece has a much higher mountain to climb than France, Serbia, or Spain to reach the United States. If Greece wins, it will be because Antetokounmpo dominates every team the Greeks face.
That’s not likely to happen. But, Giannis will give it his all in every match, we know that. So, if you want to put some money behind the squad with the best all-around player in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Greece is that team.
