Why Bet on Milwaukee?

The Brewers are on a rest disadvantage for this game because they had to play Wednesday afternoon in San Diego and then fly to St. Louis. Milwaukee is without two regulars in its lineup in shortstop Willy Adames and outfielder Hunter Renfroe as well as All-Star closer Josh Hader – although it’s possible Hader returns Thursday.

Adames is on the injured list with an ankle sprain and is improving but won’t return for this series. He is hitting .208 with nine homers and 24 RBIs this season. Renfroe landed on the injured list early this week with a right hamstring strain. Milwaukee acquired Renfroe from the Red Sox over the winter, attaching prospects David Hamilton and Alex Binelas to the contract of Jackie Bradley Jr. in order to bring in Renfroe. The power-hitting outfielder had made a favorable impression on his new club, hitting .266/.303/.503 with nine home runs through 155 plate appearances.

“We’re going to miss Hunter,” manager Craig Counsell said. “He’s been a regular for us, he’s been a good presence for us, he’s been a really good offensive player for us. We’re going to miss that, for sure. Again, it challenges your depth. He’s played incredible defense this year, I think. His arm had to be one of the most valuable arms in all baseball in the outfield.”

Hader missed the Padres series to be with his wife, who is expecting their first child but was dealing with some potential complications. Hader, a three-time All-Star, is off to an historic start. In 15 appearances across 13.2 innings, Hader has 15 saves. He has 21 strikeouts, and has given up just two hits and five walks — with no runs.

“Whenever we talk about Josh, it’s like how is he gonna get better — and he finds a way to get better,” Counsell said. “And that’s just a credit to who he is as a baseball player, and how he’s curious to get better.”

Devin Williams has been closing in his absence. Williams has recorded multiple strikeouts in each of his last 6 outings. His 33 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched rank third in the majors by a reliever, while he leads all relievers in K/9 at 17.47.

Attacking the zone with mainly his four-seam fastball, slider, and curveball, Lauer fired seven shutout innings for just the second time in his career (81 career starts). He lowered his ERA to 2.16. The team is 6-1 in his starts and he has 5 quality starts. Opponents are batting .204 off him.

Lauer Is 1-1 with a 7.90 ERA in 4 games/3 starts (13.2ip, 12er) against the Cardinals. He did not face St. Louis last season.

Why Bet on St. Louis?

Small advantage for the Cardinals in that they were off on Wednesday. They had a four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 5-1 home loss to Toronto. The Jays’ Kevin Gausman threw six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He allowed four hits and beat the Cardinals for the first time in eight appearances.

Paul Goldschmidt walked in the first inning and has reached base safely in 30 consecutive games, the longest streak in the majors this season. It’s the longest on-base streak by a Cardinal since Matt Carpenter reached in 35 games from July 8-Aug. 17, 2018.
