2021 NL Cy Young Odds Expert Analysis – MLB Betting

Written by on February 26, 2021

With the start of spring training here and the 2021 MLB regular season just over a month way from its April 1 start date, it’s time to take a look at the value-packed odds to win the 2021 National League Cy Young award.

MLB NL Cy Young Odds – Jacob deGrom Leads All Contenders

Given to the best pitcher in the NL each and every year, New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is a decisive favorite at +380 to claim the Cy Young hardware in 2021 with reigning Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer second on the odds board at +700. Tied for the third best odds are Max Scherzer and Walker Buehler, both at +1000.

Let’s look at all of the NL Cy Young odds, followed by some brief analysis on each hurler.

Odds to Win the NL Cy Young Award 2021

Jacob deGrom

The 2018 and 2019 Cy Young winner went 4-2 in 12 starts last season with a stellar 2.38 ERA and an NL Best 104 strikeouts. No wonder he’s favored to win this third in 2021.

Trevor Bauer

Now with the LA Dodgers, after signing a 3-year, $102 million deal, Bauer went 5-4 with a stunning 1.73 ERA for Cincinnati last season to claim the 2020 Cy Young award. With much better run support this coming season, Bauer could go back-to-back.

Max Scherzer

Scherzer went 5-4 with a 3.74 ERA in a dozen starts while striking out 92. Scherzer, who won the NL Cy Young in 2016 and 2017, will look to get back to a sub, 3.00 ERA in 2021.

Walker Buehler

The Dodgers’ 26-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in eight starts last season. He’ll have a chance, but he’s not the favorite on his own team if you ask me.

Aaron Nola

The 27-year-old Phillies right-hander went 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts while striking out 96. Unless Philly turns into a winner (they won’t) I don’t see it happening!

Yu Darvish

Darvish finished second in the NL Cy Young voting by going 3-0 in 12 starts with a fantastic 2.01 ERA. Now, in San Diego, I like his chances in 2021 – a lot!

Jack Flaherty

The 25-year-old went 4-3 with a 4.91 ERA in nine starts for St. Louis last season. Yikes!

Luis Castillo

The 28-year-old went 4-6 with a 3.21 ERA in 12 starts for Cincinnati last season. Castillo is a real long shot.

Blake Snell

The 2018 AL Cy Young winner went 4-2 for Tampa Bay last season in 11 starts while recording a 3.24 ERA. Now in San Diego, Snell will definitely have a chance to be one of the few pitchers to win a Cy Young in both leagues.

Stephen Strasburg

The 32-year-old right-hander was a modest 1-0 with a wild, 10.80 ERA in only two starts for Washington last season. Still, Strasburg went 18-6 in 2019 and he’s still got one of the liveliest arms in all of baseball.
