Blue Jays at Yankees MLB Odds & Pick – August 17th

Written by on August 17, 2018

The New York Yankees might not be leading the AL wild-card chase if they hadn’t acquired starting pitcher Lance Lynn from the Minnesota Twins last month. Lynn is back on the mound Friday as the Yanks open a series with the Blue Jays. New York is a sizable home MLB betting favorite.

ODDS TO WIN THE 2018 WORLD SERIES

Why Bet on Toronto?

Toronto’s Ken Giles got another save Wednesday despite giving up a solo homer to Ryan O’Hearn. Giles retired the other three batters he faced to improve to 3-for-3 in save chances for the Blue Jays. Giles was acquired from Houston in the Roberto Osuna deal. Curtis Granderson went 2-for-4 and hit a grand slam as the Blue Jays edged the Royals 6-5 on Wednesday. It was the 10th slam for Granderson, who has hit .346/.408/.646 in 130 career at-bats with the bases loaded. Granderson has cleared revocable trade waivers and is now eligible to be traded to any team. Could he return to the Yankees? They are thin in the outfield right now. Toronto usually wins when it outhits teams but not often when it doesn’t – yet it did on Wednesday despite being outhit 12-6. The Blue Jays are now 12-52 when getting outhit (had 17 such wins last year). They last won a game when outhit by six or more on August 10, 2013, when they were outhit, 11-5, by the A’s in a 5-4 win at Rogers Centre. The Jays are without two starting infielders. Second baseman Lourdes Gurriel (knee, ankle) hopes to be cleared to run the bases this week. Gurriel has increased his running intensity and range of his infield workouts lately and is almost ready to take the next step but he’s still a while from the majors. Third baseman Josh Donaldson (calf) hopes to resume baserunning drills this week. Donaldson has been ramping up his workouts at the Blue Jays’ spring training complex lately. The former AL MVP has been sidelined since late May with a lingering left calf injury. It’s Marcus Stroman (4-8, 5.03) here. Stroman allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out two across five innings as he didn’t factor into the decision Sunday against Tampa Bay. Stroman surrendered a single run in the fourth inning, though he would leave the game with a one-run deficit before the Blue Jays rallied for the victory. The 27-year-old right-hander has given up one earned run over his previous two outings (12 frames).

Why Bet on NY Yankees?

New York has boosted its terrific bullpen by calling up RHP Tommy Kahnle from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Kahnle has struggled this season at the major league level, but he’s tallied 37 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings at Triple-A. The 29-year-old right-hander was great last year with the White Sox and Yankees. He’ll work in middle relief. Injured catcher Gary Sanchez (groin) is on track to begin a rehab assignment starting Aug. 24 with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If things go well over those three games, Sanchez could be ready to return to the New York lineup that following Monday. When outfielder Aaron Judge was hit by a Jakob Junis fastball in late July, suffering a broken right wrist, the expectation was that he would miss three weeks. However, he’s still not close as Judge recently got a cortisone shot and still isn’t swinging a bat. Blue Jays at Yankees promise a lot of emotions. Judge, 26, was in the midst of another tremendous season, batting .285/.398/.548 with 26 home runs and 61 RBI in 447 plate appearances. The Yankees went 65-36 (.644) before Judge was injured but have gone 10-8 (.555) since entering Thursday. Meanwhile, third baseman Miguel Andujar continues to make a case for AL Rookie of the Year. Wednesday was his 13th career game with multiple extra-base hits. He is one of six players all-time to have 13 games with at least two extra-base hits within their first 114 career games, joining Joe DiMaggio, Johnny Frederick, Ted Williams, Hal Trosky and Cody Bellinger. Andujar is one of seven players this season with at least 13 games with multiple extra-base hits. It’s Lance Lynn (8-8, 4.46) on the bump. Lynn allowed just one run in five innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Rangers, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out eight. Lynn has been good since being shipped to New York at the deadline. In 16.2 innings, he has a 0.54 ERA and a 22:4 K: BB. It’s quite a turnaround after his ERA sat at 5.10 in 102.1 innings for the Twins. Lynn went 7-8 with a 5.10 ERA (102.1IP, 58ER) in 20 starts with the Twins before the trade.
