Brewers vs Padres MLB Odds, Preview & Expert Pick

Written by on June 17, 2019

The Milwaukee Brewers lead the NL Central Division by a game and look to expand on that Monday when they start a series at the San Diego Padres. The Friars were an early surprise but have started to regress and sit fourth in the NL West. They are slight favorites on the MLB Lines for this game, however.

Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – June 17th Edition

Why Bet on Milwaukee?

The Brewers avoided a sweep in San Francisco over the weekend with a 5-3 win Sunday. Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich is probably the favorite to win the award again and had another strong game Sunday. He went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. The 27-year-old is hitting .343/.444/.746 with 26 homers, 57 RBI, 56 runs scored and 16 steals. He could win the Triple Crown.

Josh Hader earned a two-inning save Sunday, finishing off the Giants to earn his 17th save on the season. Having not worked since Wednesday, Hader was strong and ready to go in protecting a two-run lead. On the year, the 25-year-old has 17 saves with a 2.02 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 69/12 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings.

Yasmani Grandal leads the majors as a catcher in HR (15), extra-base hits (26), total bases (118), walks (37), OBP (.397), SLG (.573) and OPS (.970).

Jhoulys Chacin (3-7, 5.74), out with a lower back strain since June 2, will come off the IL to start Monday’s Brewers opener at San Diego. Chacin has faced the Padres 16 times in his career, including 12 starts, and has a collective 3.52 ERA and 1.21 WHIP against them.

Chacin last started on 5/31 at Pittsburgh and took a 9-4 loss (2.2ip, 6h, 7r, 7er, 4bb, 2k). He has lost his last 4 starts, posting a 7.23 ERA (18.2ip, 15er). The team is 4-8 in his starts. Chacin has produced 3 quality starts. Opponents are batting .258 (57-for-221, 11hr) off Chacin this year.

Why Bet on San Diego?

The Padres had quite the weekend in Colorado as they and the Rockies set an MLB record by totaling 92 runs in the series. San Diego hung 14 on Sunday and won by just a run. Hunter Renfroe went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored.

Renfroe hit a two-run homer in the first inning and then knocked a solo shot in the seventh, helping the Padres claw back as they mounted a furious comeback. It was the second time in three games that the 27-year-old has hit at least two homers, and he hit five homers with eight RBI and seven runs scored in the four-game series in Coors Field. Renfroe now has 23 homers, 43 RBI and 33 runs scored on the season.

Brewers vs Padres is going to be a close one.

Kirby Yates struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against the Rockies, earning his 24th save of the season. He got Charlie Blackmon to fly out before fanning Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado to finish it. Yates has been fantastic all year, including Sunday, posting a 1.20 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 51/8 K/BB ratio over 30 innings while earning a league-leading 24 saves.

It’s lefty Joey Lucchesi (5-4, 4.11) on the mound here. The Padres prefer to pitch their starters on five days’ rest, but Lucchesi has been the exception. He starts with four days’ rest Monday, coming off a strong start at San Francisco in which he allowed two earned runs while striking out six over six innings.

Lucchesi will face the Brewers for the 2nd time in his career and first since his first big-league start on March 30, 2018. San Diego pitchers have allowed the 3rd-most fly balls in the NL this season (597). Padres batters have hit the 4th-fewest fly balls (529) and have a 46.1 grounder % (5th in the NL), Eric Hosmer’s ground ball % of 57.6 ranks 2nd in the ML, behind NYM’s Wilson Ramos’ 62.7 %.
