As of this writing, the Seattle Mariners haven’t announced a starting pitcher for Tuesday’s game at AL West rival Texas, but it’s likely to be veteran lefty Tommy Milone making his Seattle debut. The Rangers will be favored on the MLB odds behind Lance Lynn.

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Mariners made a trade on Monday. They acquired lefty pitcher Jesse Biddle and right-hander Arodys Vizcaino from the Braves for reliever Anthony Swarzak and cash considerations. Biddle was designated for assignment by Atlanta last week after posting a 5.40 ERA, 2.40 WHIP, and 11/10 K/BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings of relief. The 27-year-old left-hander did have some success in 2018. Vizcaino is done for the season after undergoing surgery on April 17 to repair a torn labrum and remove scar tissue in his right shoulder.

Seattle has been hit hard by injury this year and has used 40 different players (25 pitchers) already. The Mariners lead the majors in players used, ranking ahead of Detroit (39), Baltimore (38), New York Yankees (38), New York Mets (38), Pittsburgh (38) and San Francisco (38). Seattle’s 25 different pitchers are 2nd-most in the majors this season, trailing only Baltimore (26).

The Mariners’ 40 players used are already tied for 5th-most in single-season club history (also: 2016, 2010 & 1999), while the 25 pitchers are tied for 6th-most by a Seattle club (also: 2006 and 1996).

Should be veteran lefty Tommy Milone on the mound. Milone, 32, has made eight starts and one relief appearance for Class AAA this season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.83 ERA. He’s struck out 43 batters and walked 12 in 49 1/2 innings pitched. “When we brought Tommy into the organization over the winter, we saw him as a stabilizer as a possible rotation guy and if he’s in the bullpen, he can pitch multiple innings,” Manager Scott Servais said. “He’s thrown the ball pretty well.”

Milone is taking the spot of the injured Felix Hernandez. Mariners fans would prefer to see the upside of top prospect Justus Sheffield rather than the veteran Milone, but Servais said that the team’s preference moving forward is to promote Sheffield only when he’s deemed ready for a long-term audition.

Why Bet on Texas?

Excellent reliever Shawn Kelley (illness) will be activated from the injured list Tuesday. Kelley has been out for the last week and a half following surgery to remove lymph nodes from his vocal cords. He is 3-0 with two saves and a 1.29 ERA in 14 appearances in his first season with the Rangers, and last pitched May 4. Texas is without shortstop Elvis Andrus. He’s on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.

The Rangers have played 15 series this season and are 7-4-4 in them, 6-1-1 in Arlington and 1-3-3 on the road. The club’s 6-0 record in rubber games is the best in the majors. The team’s only home series loss was two games vs. Pittsburgh.

Mariners vs Rangers should have some fireworks.

Over the weekend, Shin-Soo Choo hit the 28th leadoff HR of his career, his 17th in a Texas uniform, 2nd-most in club history (Ian Kinsler-29). Each of Choo’s 28 leadoff HR have come since the start of 2012, T3rd-most in MLB in that span. Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon leads with 33. In addition, Texas has three pinch-hit homers this season, most of any MLB team and already the most for Texas in a season since 2013 (3).

It’s Lance Lynn (5-3, 4.94) on the mound. Lynn allowed one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out five across seven innings to earn the win last Thursday against the Royals. Lynn allowed a leadoff baserunner to score in the first inning but shut down the Royals from there. Lynn has been able to pitch deep into games and has been fairly effective, recording five quality starts in his nine outings this season.

He is one of 13 MLB pitchers with at least 4 outings of 7.0+ IP while allowing 3-or-fewer runs, a list that also includes teammate Mike Minor (5). Lynn ranks among Texas staff leaders in wins (1st, 5), starts (T1st, 9), innings (2nd, 54.2), and strikeouts (2nd, 49). He is 3-1, 3.33 (10 ER/27.0 IP) with 25 SO and 10 BB over his last 4 starts to drop his season ERA from 6.51 to 4.94. Lynn is 1-4 with a 3.72 ERA in six career starts vs. the Mariners.
