Marlins vs Blue Jays – MLB Odds & Picks

It has been a crazy 2020 with the coronavirus, and more so for the Toronto Blue Jays than any other pro sports team. The Jays will play their “home” games at the home of their Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo and host the Miami Marlins there on Wednesday with the Jays favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Marlins remain without several players who are out due to testing positive for the coronavirus. They have already started 18 different position players during this young season due to COVID-19 cases and platooning.

The Marlins start Jordan Yamamoto (0-0, 9.00). Yamamoto allowed four runs on six hits over four innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Orioles. Yamamoto was the odd man out of the Marlins’ rotation coming out of Summer Camp but their COVID-19 outbreak led the team to recall the right-hander to make his season debut Thursday.

It was a relatively soft landing spot against a bad Orioles team but Yamamoto didn’t capitalize, giving up six hits — including a pair of solo homers — while allowing runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. He did manage to strike out four without walking a batter. Yamamoto didn’t last long in his season debut, but he didn’t factor into the decision since Baltimore’s starting pitcher, Wade LeBlanc, also endured his fair share of struggles.

“It’s just adjusting and taking every game and taking every outing and rolling with it so that I stay unpredictable to the hitters,” Yamamoto said.

As a rookie in 2019, Yamamoto had a 2.95 ERA in seven road starts. The 24-year-old looked like a was an All-Star when he was called to The Show in mid-June of last year, but went through the growing pains of adjusting to life in the Majors. He also dealt with an injury late in the 2019 season

In his career, he has 86 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings.

Why Bet on Toronto?

The Blue Jays last played the Marlins in 2018, taking two of three contests in Miami. The Jays are 11-19 all-time vs. the Fish, but have taken seven of the last nine meetings, dating back to 2012.

Travis Shaw has played 20 career games against Miami and hit .305 (18-for-59) with two doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI in those contests. Joe Panik leads all current Blue Jays with 30 career games played vs. the Marlins. He has hit.243 (27-for111) with six extra-base hits (4-2B, 1-3B, 1HR) and 17 walks (11K).

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Tuesday that Ken Giles is “recovering well” and “could be throwing soon.” Giles went down with a flexor strain in his right forearm late last month and has apparently felt improvement following a platelet-rich plasma injection. He’s set for a check-up on Wednesday, including an MRI. Anthony Bass has been filling in at closer for Toronto.

It’s touted rookie right-hander Nate Pearson (0-0, 2.70 ERA) on the mound for Toronto. Pearson surrendered three runs in five innings Thursday against the Braves. Pearson allowed just two hits, but one was a two-run homer in the first inning. He hurt his cause with three walks and a wild pitch that led to a run in the fourth.

Pearson found himself on the wrong side of the scoreboard after surrendering a first-inning, two-run home run to Freddie Freeman. Despite the early deficit, Pearson quickly settled down, allowing one final run on a sacrifice fly to Adam Duvall in the fourth. Pearson was excellent in his major-league debut against the Nationals, striking out five across five scoreless innings.

Pearson has looked sharp early, but his focus on Wednesday will be on repeating his delivery and limiting walks. When Pearson does that, he can rack up strikeouts and take a run at 100 mph on the radar gun for the first time in MLB.
