The New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles were not supposed to have similar records this late in the season as the Birds have overachieved and the Mets have disappointed. They close out a series in Baltimore on Wednesday with a matinee.

Why Bet on NY Mets?

The Mets optioned pitcher Drew Smith to their alternate training site and recalled fellow pitcher Hunter Strickland. Smith returned to the majors on Sunday and gave up the go-ahead grand slam to Gary Sanchez in the second game of their doubleheader against the Yankees. Strickland allowed three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings during a brief stint with the Mets out of summer camp.

Outfielder JD Davis is listed as day-to-day with a hip injury. Davis was forced to exit Sunday’s game due to lingering effects of a hip issue from a hit-by-pitch on Saturday. Davis is hitting .266 with four homers.

Manager Luis Rojas has given closer Edwin Diaz a vote of confidence even though he was torched again Sunday and has a 5.80 ERA. Rojas says he still wants Diaz to be a key cog in the bullpen in the future. After all, the New York Mets invested considerable resources to bring him to New York, namely prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn.

“We still trust him,” Rojas said. “We still love his stuff. And that’s when he’s going to get the ball, when there’s tight situations, when there’s tense situations like that.”

The Mets are fourth in the majors and third in the National League with a .264 batting average. They Mets lead the majors with a .349 OBP this year. The Mets are batting .218/.312/.341 slash line with RISP this season. That average is the third-lowest in the majors. Michael Conforto has safely reached base in 31 games this season. He is batting .320/.424/.500 with 22 runs, seven doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and 17 walks.

New York has not named a starting pitcher for Tuesday because they have played so many doubleheaders of late. It probably will be either David Peterson or Michael Wacha. They pitched in Friday’s doubleheader and would be on normal rest. Wacha and Peterson were both recently on the injured list and how their bodies respond from their previous starts will be telling for how the team will move forward.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

On Sunday, the Orioles made two trades. They acquired two players to be named later from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for LHP Tommy Milone and acquired INF Tyler Nevin, INF Terrin Vavra, and a player to be named later from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for RHP Mychal Givens.

The Orioles have started to tail off a bit after a very solid 14-14 start. Manager Brandon Hyde has removed Cole Sulser from the closer role. This comes after he suffered his third blown save of the season Sunday against the Blue Jays. Hyde plans to mix-and-match in the ninth inning, with Miguel Castro probably the most likely option as a fill-in. Hunter Harvey also could get a look. He was just activated over the weekend. An elbow injury had kept him out all year.

Sulser has saved five games for the Orioles this season but has blown three more opportunities. He’s given up runs in each of his last four outings, walking eight batters in five innings over that stretch. His 4.70 ERA, 21.2 percent strikeout rate and 19.7 percent walk rate are not great. Sulser, an offseason waiver claim who had made seven scoreless appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays last September, has yet to pitch earlier than the eighth inning and has been asked to pitch across multiple innings in six of his 11 outings with the Orioles.

The O’s have been very successful swinging at the first pitch. They rank first in the majors in batting average (.429), rank second in OPS (1.168) and extra-base hits (23),

It’s lefty John Means (0-2) scheduled to pitch Wednesday, and he has been just terrible this year. Means pitched OK in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Friday night, allowing two runs on four hits over his four innings of work. Means struck out three and walked one. All of the damage done against him came in his final inning of work, where Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Teoscar Hernandez smacked back-to-back solo homers. The left-hander threw 74 pitches on the night – 47 of them for strikes and now has an 8.59 ERA.
