Thus, the Padres and Rockies close their series Monday on national TV as they battle for second place in the NL West behind the Dodgers.

Why Bet on San Diego?

The Padres were busy over the weekend making trades and might not be done ahead of Monday afternoon’s trade deadline. The team acquired first baseman/DH Mitch Moreland from the Red Sox, reliever Trevor Rosenthal from Kansas City, catcher Jason Castro from the Angels and catcher Austin Nola and relievers Dan Altavilla and Austin Adams from Seattle.

The Friars are clearly going all in to make the playoffs, and we believe they will – although they won’t catch the Dodgers for the NL West title. San Diego also is talking to Cleveland about pitcher Mike Clevinger and with Texas about pitcher Lance Lynn and slugger Joey Gallo.

San Diego has won two of the first three games in the series following Sunday’s 13-2 win. Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer in the first inning to get things started and that was one of five for the Padres, who rank second in the majors with 66 this season. Jake Cronenworth added a two-run drive in the seventh before Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham lined solo shots in the eighth. Josh Naylor finished it off with a towering two-run homer in the ninth.

Hosmer is enjoying a nice resurgence this season, hitting .290/.340/.570 with seven homers and 25 RBI. Designated hitter Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to 12 games with two singles. Fernando Tatis Jr. had another big day with three hits, including two doubles. He also was hit by a pitch. The Padres had 19 multi-homer games this season.

So far this season, there are 18 players with 70+ plate appearances against right-handed pitchers and an OPS over 1.000. With the acquisition of Moreland, the Padres have 4 such players: Moreland (1.225), Tatis Jr. (1.087), Cronenworth (1.077) and Machado (1.087).

It’s Garrett Richards (1-2) on the mound Monday. It’ll be a short-rest outing for Richards, who has failed to make it past the third inning in each of his last two starts. The 32-year-old right-hander holds a disappointing 5.17 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 25/14 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings this season. Richards’ curveball ranks 1st in the majors in average vertical movement (11.2 inches).

The Rockies also made a trade over the weekend, landing potential closer Mychal Givens from Baltimore for prospects. Givens put up a 1.38 ERA and 19/6 K/BB ratio across 13 innings this season and probably will be a setup man first but could close eventually. In his career with the Orioles since 2015, he has gone 20-17 with a 3.32 ERA (336.0 IP, 124 ER), 129 walks and 406 strikeouts across 296 appearances.

Following Sunday’s loss, Colorado has now allowed 10 or more runs in five of their last seven losses and each of their last four losses at home. Nolan Arenado went 2-for-3 with a double Sunday and now has multiple hits in four of his last five games since Aug. 25 at Arizona. He had had just four multi-hit games over his previous 27 games to start the season. Trevor Story went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and had his nine-game hitting streak snapped.

Rockies starter German Marquez (2-4) yielded three runs over five innings last Tuesday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks. Marquez surrendered six hits, including solo homers to Christian Walker and Jon Jay in the second inning. He struck out five batters and also issued three walks. He’ll carry a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 40/13 K/BB ratio across 42 innings (seven starts) into this start.

Marquez began the season allowing one run in each of his first two starts, and, even though he has allowed multiple runs in each of his last five outings, his numbers are inflated by an Aug. 20 performance against Houston when he surrendered 10 runs across five innings. He has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his other six starts this season, posting a 2.68 ERA in 37 innings when removing the outing against the Astros.

Marquez career is 5-2 with a 4.88 ERA (55.1 IP, 30 E) in 11 games, nine starts, vs. San Diego. He is 3-0 with a 4.91 ERA (22.0 IP, 12 ER) in five games, four starts, vs. the Padres in Denver. He was 3-0 with a 5.59 ERA (19.1 IP, 12 ER) in three starts vs. SD overall last season.
