Houston Astros

The defending World Series champions come into the season with the expectation that they will once again make another deep playoff run. They will not have Jose Altuve until June after he got hit by a pitch in the WBC. The Astros added Jose Abreu in the offseason, so I don’t expect there to be too much fallout from that injury. Other than that, this is essentially the same team that won 106 games last year and won the division by a mammoth 16 games. That win total might be lower this time around, but it’s tough to imagine that they won’t win the West.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners went 90-73 last season, which was enough to earn them an AL Wild Card spot. They got past the Blue Jays in the postseason, but then ran into an absolute buzzsaw in the Astros, who took them out in a 3-game sweep. The Mariners feel as though they are in a position to take a run at the division crown this season, making offseason moves to add more offense to the lineup. That might help make the division a little tighter this time around, with the Mariners being the team most likely to spring the upset.

LA Angels

In Mike Trout and Shotei Ohtani, the Angels have two of the best players in the league on their roster, but that has not been enough to deliver success to this team. Ohtani, who is nearing the end of his contract, has made it clear that he wants to be on a winning team, so a repeat of their 73-89 record from last season might well mean that he is out the door sooner rather than later. They made some key additions in the offseason, but will that be enough to challenge in what is a very tough division?
