Last Meeting
These teams met in the 2021 NLDS and the Dodgers won Game 5 2-1 in San Francisco to advance to the NLCS. Cody Bellinger hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth and Max Scherzer came out of the bullpen for his first career save. With a runner aboard, Scherzer fanned Wilmer Flores on a check-swing for the final out. Plate umpire Doug Eddings checked with first base ump Gabe Morales, who ruled Flores swung. But on television replays, it certainly appeared he held up. Scherzer is now with the Mets.
Why Bet on San Francisco?
The Giants lost two of three over the weekend at home to a bad Washington team. It was an 11-5 defeat on Sunday. Mike Ford went 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the loss. Acquired by the Giants on April 30, Ford immediately made his presence felt. Down by five runs in the bottom of the seventh, Ford laced a 110.4 mph two-run single to center field off of Steve Cishek.
The Giants lead the majors with 48 RBI with two-outs. San Francisco’s .318 average with runners in scoring position and two-outs is the third-best figure in the majors behind the Reds (.361) and Tigers (.354). San Francisco is 9-0 this season when scoring at least five runs.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler indicated Sunday that outfielder LaMonte Wade (knee) could be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. Wade has been on a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento since April 22 where he has hit .357/.524/.714 with a homer and six RBI in his first 21 plate appearances. With Brandon Belt (COVID-19) on the shelf, Wade should return to an everyday role.
It’s ace lefty and Cy Young contender Carlos Rodon (3-0) on the mound. Rodon struck out nine while allowing just one run over six innings in last Tuesday’s 8-2 win over the A’s. He scattered three hits while issuing a pair of walks. The only run to score on his watch came when Sheldon Neuse managed an RBI single in the second inning. Rodon, 29, is off to a magnificent start to the season, posting a 1.17 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 38/8 K/BB ratio in four starts covering 23 innings of work. He has yet to strike out fewer than eight batters in a start.
Rodon’s 38 strikeouts have set the franchise record for strikeouts through the first four starts of the season, passing Tim Lincecum and Christy Mathewson. Rodon has yet to allow more than three hits or one run in his Giants career, and he has at least eight strikeouts every time out. The only other pitcher in the modern era to have that kind of run to open a season in four starts is the Mets’ Jacob deGrom.
“We had heard through people that we have in common — all of us — that he was pretty electric on the mound, and obviously we had some White Sox highlights and looked at his numbers,” Kapler said. “I think we had a pretty good indication that he was a dominant starter, and he has certainly met or exceeded our expectations.”
Why Bet on Los Angeles?
The Dodgers enter off a 5-3 home win over Detroit on Sunday. Cody Bellinger went 1-for-4 with an RBI double. After Chris Taylor hit a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth, Bellinger drove him in on a 90.7 mph double down the right field line. He’s hit four home runs and swiped three bags through 21 games, but his .208 batting average over 77 at-bats leaves much to be desired.
Tommy Kahnle pitched in his first game Sunday since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, and he threw a perfect frame during which he struck out two batters. It’s been a long road back to health for Kahnle, who suffered a UCL injury in his right arm during his first and only appearance in 2020 and subsequently opted for Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers signed him in December of that year with the knowledge that they likely wouldn’t have his services until 2022. Kahnle should immediately see work in situations that would have previously been handled by Blake Treinen, who is on the injured list with a shoulder injury.
Closer Craig Kimbrel saved Sunday’s win, walking one while preventing any runs in two-thirds of an inning. Kimbrel came into the game with one out and a runner on second to protect a three-run lead and got the final two outs without letting any more runs cross the plate. Though he’s made only six appearances, Kimbrel has four saves while allowing just one run in 5.2 innings.
It’s lefty Julio Urias (1-1, 2.50) on the mound here. Urias pitched well in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks last Wednesday, allowing just one run on one hit over his six innings. He struck out four while issuing a pair of free passes. The only hit that he allowed in the contest was a solo homer to Nick Ahmed in the fifth inning. Urias generated seven swinging strikes on his 81 pitches, posting a CSW of 28 percent.
Urias owns a 33-11 record with four saves and a 3.09 ERA in 110 games (74 starts) in seven Major League seasons with Los Angeles. He has struck out 442 batters and walked 136 batters. In 20 games (14 starts), he is 2-3 with a 2.63 ERA (22 ER/76.0 IP) and 78 strikeouts against the Giants Last season, he went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA (11 ER/29.1 IP) and 33 strikeouts against the Giants.
