Top MLB Series Of The Week (Sept. 12-18)

If we are being honest, it’s fair to say that all but a couple of the divisions in baseball have been clinched. It would take a collapse of epic proportions for most of the leaders to miss out on the postseason now, and that means we will be turning a closer eye to the Wild Card races that are going on in both conferences. There are, as always, a lot of good series on tap for the week, but there are definitely some that are more important than others in the grand scheme of things. New York Mets at Washington Nationals – Sept 12-14

With a 9-game lead in the NL East, the Washington Nationals look like a shoe-in to win the division, but the Mets could certainly make things a little more interesting by winning this series and closing the gap. In reality, though, the Mets are looking at a Wild Card spot, and they have been playing their best ball of the season in the past couple of weeks. They currently hold one of the postseason spots, and have a schedule that is very favorable heading home. A win in this series could give them the boost they need to finish strong.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox – Sept 12-14

The AL East is one of the divisions that is still wide open, with just 2 games separating the first place Red Sox from the third place Orioles. Both teams will be well aware that any slip-ups here could mean that the Toronto Blue Jays might be able to improve their standings in the division. These two will hook up one more time before the season comes to a close, and a win in this one could set the tone for what comes later.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants – Sept 15-18

This series is a big one for a couple of different reasons, and it all begins with the Giants trying to run down the Dodgers, who they trail by 2 games, in the NL West. The Giants are currently sitting pretty in a Wild Card spot, but they would much sooner have the division title than playing the play-in game. One of the teams that they are holding off in the Wild Card are the Cardinals, and this is their only shot at getting in, as St. Louis trails the Cubs by 16 games right now. This could well be do or die for the Cards.

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians – Sept 16-18

The Tigers quest to win the AL Central looks to be dead, as they are currently sitting 7 games back of the Cleveland Indians. All is not lost in the Wild Card race, though, as they are just two games out. They have a rather easy looking series versus the Twins prior to this one, and they can build a real head of steam for the final couple of weeks by taking something from this one too.
