Why Bet on NY Yankees?

This is just a quick two-game series after New York played a doubleheader in Detroit on Monday. Aaron Judge finished the doubleheader an ugly 0-for-9 with eight strikeouts and a walk. Those Ks set a new big league record for whiffing in a twin bill. The previous record for strikeouts in a doubleheader was seven, held by six guys: Pat Seerey of the White Sox in 1948, Dave Nicholson of the White Sox in 1963, Bill Melton of the White Sox in 1970, Frank Howard of the Senators in 1965, Mike Vail of the Mets in 1975 and Shea Hillenbrand of the Blue Jays in 2005. Judge had cut down on the strikeouts a bit through two months, but whiffed a whopping 208 times last year. He still won AL Rookie of the Year and set an MLB rookie record with 52 homers.New York has optioned RHP Tommy Kahnle to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Kahnle hasn’t been the same pitcher this season after his breakout 2017, as his velocity has been down a few ticks and he’s walked 10 batters over nine innings. He was acquired last summer from the White Sox. Adam Warren took his spot on the roster.

Who Takes the Bump for the Yankees?

It’s Sonny Gray on the bump for the Bombers. Gray (4-4, 5.50) allowed one run on four hits and struck out six across six innings as he picked up the win Friday against the Orioles. Gray surrendered a solo home run to Manny Machado in the second inning, but he would go on to toss a quality outing. The zero-walk outing is particularly encouraging, as Gray entered with a career-high 5.1 BB/9 rate. He was able to bounce back from his previous start when he took the loss after allowing five runs in 3.2 innings to the Angels.Gray is 2-3 with a 2.31 ERA in six career games in Toronto. The Yankees are a Major League-best 29-2 (.935) when allowing four-or-fewer runs this season. No other team in the majors has fewer than six losses when allowing 4-runs-or-less. The best mark over a full season since 1901 belongs to the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics (84-7, .923).

Why Bet on Toronto?

Are the Blue Jays a safe betting pick on Wednesday?Back on May 16, the Jays won at the Mets 12-1 to improve to 22-21 but are 26-33 entering this series and missing some key guys like third baseman Josh Donaldson (DL) and closer Roberto Osuna (suspended).Major League Baseball has extended the administrative leave for Osuna for another week through June 11. Osuna’s first court date for his charge of assault is on June 18 and is going to extend the pitcher’s administrative leave at least through that date. An official suspension is undoubtedly coming after the conclusion of Osuna’s case. The Blue Jays have tried a couple guys at closer since Osuna has been out but Ryan Tepera looks to be the favorite for saves for now.Donaldson (calf) expects to return to the Blue Jays when first eligible Friday. Donaldson hit the shelf Friday, retroactive to May 29, with left calf tightness, but he is going through normal hitting and throwing routines despite the injury.

Who Will Start for the Blue Jays?

The Jays start Sam Gaviglio here. Gaviglio (2-1, 3.32) has done a nice job as a fill-in starter but took the loss by allowing seven hits and four runs over six innings last Wednesday in the Blue Jays’ loss to the Red Sox. He struck out four and didn’t walk anyone while throwing 55 of his 83 pitches for strikes. The long ball was Gaviglio’s undoing as the right-hander served up home runs to Eduardo Nunez and J.D. Martinez. He’s now yielded four homers over his last two starts after not allowing a homer in his first three outings this year.Still Gaviglio has tossed six innings in each of his past two starts, and he has a respectable 3.63 ERA during his brief tenure as a starter. His early success has allowed him to hold off Joe Biagini for the final spot in the Blue Jays’ rotation. Gaviglio hasn’t faced the Yankees this year.
